One of the easiest ways to help our dogs understand what they’re doing correctly is to mark the exact moment a desirable behavior happens. A marker, like a clicker or a consistent “yes!”, tells your dog, “That right there earned you a reward!”

But first, you have to build meaning behind that marker. Start by pairing it with a treat: mark, then give the treat. With repetition, your puppy learns that the sound predicts something good!

Once that connection is established, you can start capturing behaviors you like. When your puppy offers a behavior on their own, like sitting or checking in with you, mark that moment and reward them. Those everyday moments become opportunities to learn.

Check out this video for a closer look at markers and how capturing works!

This weekend, we said goodbye to our longtime friend and client, Celeste, a sweet Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who has held such a special place in my heart.

Celeste has been a regular part of my week since 2019, though I’ve known her for much longer. After so many years together, her presence became a familiar and treasured part of my routine. She will be sorely missed, and my weeks will feel different without her.

To Celeste’s family, thank you for trusting us with your girl over all these years. Being part of her life and caring for her has meant so much to me. My heart is with you as you navigate this loss.

And to Celeste, thank you for all the years of companionship and the memories you leave behind. You will always be part of our Urban Uplander family.

Heading to the English Setter Association of America National Specialty the first week of November?

Stop by my vending booth for the opportunity to test for the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and any level of AKC Trick Dog! Testing is $20 per test, or receive $5 off when testing for both a CGC and Trick Dog Novice title ($35 totally).

There is no scheduled testing time, so simply stop by whenever you have an opening throughout the week. Come have some fun with your English Setter and potentially head home with a new title or two!

I couldn’t agree more with the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s new guidelines for choosing a quality dog trainer! Education, transparency, humane methods, and respect for both ends of the leash matter. Training should build confidence and trust, never fear.

Unfortunately, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Fetch trial at the Autumn Harvest Cluster.

I’ve seen several posts about the cancellation being shared, and it’s interesting to see how much attention and interest the event is receiving now, considering only four people actually signed up.

The other judge and I are individuals, not clubs. We do not have existing funds or inventory set aside for events like this. We would be investing our own money in ribbons, supplies, application fees, and everything else required to host the trial. With only four entries, we cannot justify that financial investment or rely on enough day-of entries to cover our costs.

We truly wanted to offer this opportunity and thought there would be more understanding surrounding the decision. Instead, some of the discouraging posts and comments have been incredibly disheartening. Interest and social media engagement are appreciated, but early entries are what allow small organizers like us to make events possible.

We hope everyone can understand that this was not a decision we wanted to make, but it was the responsible one based on the actual number of registrations received. Everyone who registered will be refunded as soon as possible.

Sadly due to lack of entries Urban Uplander has made the difficult decision to cancel Fetch Testing at our cluster.

Around 11 or 12 years ago, when we were just getting started, one of our very first client families trusted us with three incredible boys: Bentley, Brooks, and Walker. They were there at the very beginning, back when we were simply pet sitting and building what would eventually become Urban Uplander.

Recently, Walker, the last of the three brothers, has crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

It feels like the closing chapter of our original fluffy puppy pet sitting era. These boys were more than clients. They helped shape our journey and gave us the opportunity to do what we love. They were there before the daycare, before the training programs, before the breeding program, and before so much of what Urban Uplander has become today.

We are incredibly grateful to have shared a small part of their lives and to have watched them grow from playful youngsters into beloved seniors. Walker will be deeply missed, and our hearts are with his family as they say goodbye.

Thank you, Bentley, Brooks, and Walker, for being part of our story from the very beginning. You'll always hold a special place in the history of Urban Uplander. ❤️🐾

My condolences to Walker's family. It's clear those three boys helped lay the foundation for everything your business has become.

It looks like Smooth Collies are slowly taking over Urban Uplander, and I am absolutely here for it!

We now have two Smooth Collies joining us for daycare, and somehow I've also ended up with several friends who own them. To make it even more exciting, one of those friends is a breeder and is expecting a litter of puppies soon!

I think this officially means we need to organize a Collie meetup. Whether you already own one, are interested in the breed, or just want to meet some wonderful dogs, I think it would be a blast.
