Can your dog do nothing in public?

Anyone can ask for a sit or down. The real test is whether your dog can move through a public environment and then settle while life keeps happening around them.
That’s what this moment shows.
Movement → transition → calm.

Because real-world dog training should make everyday life easier, not just produce commands.

Would your dog come back from this far?
Todd does.

This Cane Corso closes the distance, completes the recall, and reconnects with his owner.
That is the real goal of recall training: communication strong enough to bring your dog back to you when distance opens up. Real footage. Real training. Real-world reliability.

Can your dog stay DOWN when you walk away?
Getting into position is only step one.

Watch Nelson hold the down-stay as more distance is created between him and the handler.
Calm. Duration. Distance.

That’s how obedience becomes reliable enough to use in real life. Big N’ Small Paws 317 Indianapolis Dog Training

The down isn’t the impressive part.
Watch what happens before it.
Frank stays connected to the handler, adjusts as the handler moves, and keeps working instead of simply waiting for the final command.

That is what experienced dog trainers look for: engagement, communication, responsiveness, and behavior that stays consistent through movement and transitions.

A finished command matters. The connection that gets you there matters more.
At Big N’ Small Paws 317, we focus on practical dog training that helps owners build clearer communication and more reliable behavior in everyday life.

He’s 7 years old, giving the cues, and the dog responds with a sit and a down.
That short moment says a lot about what good dog training should accomplish.
We want the dog to understand clear communication from the people they actually live with, not become dependent on a professional trainer standing beside them.
That means teaching the dog, coaching the family, and building behavior that transfers back into everyday life.
Training should work where it matters most: at home, with your family.

Would your dog come back when distance opens up?
That is where training starts to matter.
In this clip, you can see the dog create space, reconnect with the handler, return, and finish calmly. That kind of reliability is built through clear communication, repetition, engagement, and practicing beyond a few feet away.
The goal is not just a dog that listens when everything is easy. The goal is behavior you can depend on when there is more freedom and more distance.
That is real-world dog training.

Off-leash freedom should never look like chaos.
Three dogs. Real public environment. No constant motion. No frantic energy. Just the ability to settle, stay composed, and exist calmly in the world around them.
That is what practical dog training should build.

Freedom is earned through structure, communication, repetition, and real-world practice. The goal is not just a dog that can perform commands. The goal is a dog you can actually enjoy taking places.

If your dog struggles with focus, pulling, overexcitement, or settling in public, we can help build the skills that make everyday life easier.

Does your dog walk you?

This Newfypoo is learning what a good walk should actually feel like: a slack leash, steady pace, better focus, and no constant pulling.

That’s what real-world dog training is about. Not just obedience inside a building, but behavior that carries over into everyday life.

If walks have become frustrating because of pulling, distractions, or poor focus, we can help.

Sunday’s training focus is impulse control and duration in the stay.

A reliable stay is not measured by how quickly a dog gets into position. It is measured by whether the dog can remain calm, manage the impulse to move, and wait until released.

In this session, we are using an elevated cot to give the dog a clear boundary. We build duration in manageable increments, reinforce calm decisions, and use an intentional release. Distance and larger distractions are added only after the dog understands the foundation.

This structured progression helps create a dog that understands the task instead of simply holding position for a few uncertain seconds.

Big N’ Small Paws 317 is a family-owned Indianapolis dog-training business established in 2019.

We provide Board and Train programs, private lessons, and customized obedience training for Indianapolis and surrounding Central Indiana communities.

If your dog breaks position, struggles to settle, or has difficulty controlling impulses, schedule a free phone consultation.

Can your dog settle anywhere, or only when everything is quiet and familiar?

Real-world obedience is more than getting one good repetition inside a controlled training room. It means helping a dog remain calm, hold position, and stay connected to the handler as locations, surfaces, and surroundings change.

This video shows dogs practicing calm position work throughout a public environment. The setting changes, but the expectation remains consistent.

At Big N’ Small Paws 317, we train for the situations Indianapolis dog owners experience in everyday life. Our programs focus on clear communication, structured practice, confidence, and reliable obedience that carries over beyond the training facility.

If your dog struggles to settle, maintain focus, or follow commands away from home, schedule a free phone consultation.
