Cats Haven is in great need of volunteer help. We are looking for volunteers for afternoons/early evenings shifts to change potty pads, scoop litter pans, and just tidy up for the night. Help is also needed with the early day cleaning, we usually start about 9:30 a.m. Please reach out to Barbara at: [email protected]. Even if you could help for just a few hours one day a month, that would be wonderful.

UPDATE: While we're sharing pictures of this lovely little family who was dumped on our street in a sealed tote, we think it'd be a great time to remind our supporters that kittens and nursing moms take a lot of resources that Cats Haven doesn't usually have on hand these days!! Honey Bunny (that's mom) is chowing down on at least 3 cups of dry food per day as well as Churu and other "smoothie" snacks. It take a lot to nurse a family of five, you know!! We are also using clay litter for them, and we'll be introducing the babies to kitten food before too long. And a few weeks down the road, we'll be looking at added vet expenses for the whole crew. So we will gladly accept donations of:
Churu Bisque (mom loves it)
Clay litter
Baby food (human . . . turkey, chicken, and ham)
Purina Kitten Chow
And monetary donations to go toward vetting
Honey Bunny and her kids Hydrangea, Hibiscus, Hosta, Hollyhock, and Hyacinth want to say thank you. Actually, Honey Bunny is more than likely saying "HUMANS!!!! AAAACCCCKKKKKK!!! HISSSSSSSS!!!!" because she's incredibly unfriendly, but can you blame her!?!? Stuffed in a tote with five babies and left next to the street would tend to make anyone a little grumpy. But they're all doing well.

Sue Hildebrandt was able to sneak in while she was feeding them and got this picture.
The fabric you are seeing is a large washable pad put under and up along the cage so the kittens wouldn't fall out.

I debated about posting the latest dropoffs from last week.

Left just outside our side gate on 26th St after 1am. I cannot imagine the terror she felt. Traffic thru the night and the terrible twin juvenile raccoons that roam that area.
However, here they are. What you are not seeing in the pictures are 5 tiny kittens that came with her.
I have named her Honey Bunny because she is she color of honey. A very fierce momma. She charges the cage door when I am trying to take care her. I now give her a Churu stew first; which I scoot into the back of the cage with a pink hanger. She follows and that gives me time to give her food and water, plus switch out a clean litter box.
I really hope this is it for dumped cats/kittens this month. Mom and kits go into my office and I can only do one set at a time. The other foster home for mom/kits is dealing with family issues and not available to foster.
So meet Honey Bunny; a very great momma.

With high temps and high humidity expected starting tomorrow, Cats Haven will be closed to the public Wednesday July 15 through Friday July 17. Cats are very sensitive to heat and humidity, especially health-compromised cats like we have at the shelter, and we need to keep our doors closed as much as possible. Thanks much for helping to keep our residents safe! We'll see you again on Saturday the 18th!!

The staff, volunteers, and even the kitties are not sorry to see June go this year!! Aside from the rainy weather and then monster heat, we had four cats dumped on us. Before we go any further, know that dumping any animal in Marion county is against the law, and we do have cameras all around our property. But we would like to introduce you to the four whose humans felt it was the right thing to do to leave them unprotected on shelter grounds. The beautiful gray girl is Shadow Rain (found abandoned in a carrier); the handsome black and white guy is Ralph (we trapped this guy over two weeks); the white and black kid is Robin (also found abandoned in a carrier); and the kitten is Crowley (he kinda trapped himself by getting stuck in the enclosure fencing, trying to get in with the other cats). Of the four, none were very amused by being left behind and ending up in a shelter. But we’ve had them all vetted, they’ve all calmed down and are nice cats, and we’ve made arrangements for them to not have to live their lives at Cats Haven. The ones who are old enough have been neutered, all have had appropriate vaccinations, and they’re microchipped.
Needless to say, this all costs money, and vet services keep going up. Many think that shelters and rescues get free vet care, and that’s very far from the truth. We run on a tight budget, so when things like this happen, our budget is affected. We don’t like to ask for donations, but we could use some help with these unexpected vet bills. If you have a few extra dollars you’d like to donate, please use our email address ([email protected]) to donate through PayPal or Venmo. We know money is tight, and if you want to help but can’t make a monetary donation, please consider spending some volunteer hours at the shelter! We can use help every day of the week (mornings, afternoons, or evenings) with sweeping, scooping, mopping, and feeding the kitties. If you’re interested in helping out, contact Barbara at 317-925-7001 and she can give you all the particulars.
Thanks so much for supporting the kitties at the shelter, and for all the help you’ve given us over the years. If it wasn’t for all of you, we wouldn’t be able to help as many and as much as we do.

It’s time for the kitties to close the shelter due to the heat and lounge poolside with a cool catnip cocktail. Cats Haven will be closed all week and will hopefully reopen on July 7th. If you have donations, call Barb at (317) 925-7001. Stay cool, kitties!! It’s hot out there!!

More happy tails updates! Our sweet Syndey has made fast friends with his new brother, Maurice. His owners say he has a lot of energy and makes them laugh every day. Meanwhile, gentle Rosebud has been adopted and is settling in nicely. Her owner calls her an absolute joy, and she is very content in her new role as queen of the castle!
