✨️ LEARNED CALMNESS ✨️

I promised some long videos of Scoochie. Here's one, definitely a

Scoochie is exactly what I expect an adolescent German Shorthaired Pointer to be. Highly intelligent and incredible athleticism result in a dog that can do just about anything he sets his mind to. This could work for or against his owners...

When Schoohie and I met he was 100mph at all times. He had already been through some training elsewhere and knew basic command but couldn't hold still to save his life.

Zero chill.

I swear to goodness this dog would run into a room and not slow down to run up a cabinet to the counter.

Food was never safe around Scoochie; he would find a way to get it. He could place but he would get up quickly. And forget about sitting on the couch - he had no idea what personal space was.

This is exactly what I would expect from a teenaged GSP.

And all he needed was two things
1. Crazy brain doesnt pay off
2. Calmness gets him everything

The only time he got anything from me (attention, crate open, treat, ice cube, ball, leash, etc) was if he could give me calmness first.

Impulse control as a ✨️lifestyle✨️ is what made Schoochie possible to live with.

The prong is on in this video in case he tried to knock a kid over, not for the place The place cue was made solid by making it more rewarding to stay on the cot than to leave.

But holding still with this level of focus would not have been possible if it werent for all the small repetions of impulse control/calmness inside.

With maturity Schoochie is going to be the perfect dog for his family 🥰

What did your dog's fall break look like? We are living our best life. If at the end of the day the dogs and kid are dirty and tired then I know we had a good day. 🥰

I call this move the "if you give a mouse a cookie".

Look at his front feet. Essentially the dog is asking "is this much of ny body off the cot allowed?"

And if we accept that (dont put him back where he should be) then he will edge off a bit more and ask "ok then is thiiiiiis much off the cot allowed?"

Until you have a dog with one toe on the cot saying "what, you said this was ok"

If you give a mouse a cookie

Or more literally

If you give an inch, eventually they take a mile.

And if your dog is wondering how much he can get away with he surely isnt SETTLED like we are going for.

Why is Scoochie with me for training? Hes an absolute spaz. He is a million miles an hour and insanely food driven. Set something on the counter and blink and Scoochie will gaslight you into thinking it was never there. Want to sit on the couch and eat? Scoochie will wrestle/tackle the food out of your hand before you sit down.

Or at least he used to! Dont get me wrong, he will shoot his shot if he thinks he can get away with it. But now kids can walk around with snacks, food can be left out, and I can cook without having to crate him.

Scoochie has a preschool aged human sister and a baby coming in just a few weeks so we need to make sure he is as good at resisting urges as possible before then!

He is responding to me verbally about 99% of the time which I take as a big win.

I'll upload a couple of long featuring Scoochie this week.

P.S. I would normally interrupt Mochi giving that many face kisses but didnt want to miss getting Scoochie's good choices on video.

WOW I'm in shock look at Cooper!!

Mochi has several nick names. This past weekend her mom shared "water buffalo" and "house hippo" and I realized here I've been calling her "moo moo", obviously a derivative of "Mochi moo". How many nick names does your dog have?

So this is long and boring. I will be amazed if it gets 5 likes 😂 BUT this is a lot of what I do. I have half a terabyte of storage on my phone of videos like this. It's boring. It's slow. It isn't flashy. But Luna can walk through a store now because of it.

BALANCE.

Finding a way to say to the dog - this isnt a choice, we will not run from things. While also proceeding in the gentlest way possible.

I will not allow Luna to run away, she must maintain a loose leash. But I also move at her speed.
--> requiring a loose leash shuts down the panic by engaging the brain and all the sudden we are socializing. Looking at things she has never truly seen or processed because she was panicking.

This process with Luna started at a neighborhood park with just one person 100 yards away.

Balancing pushing without pushing too hard.

Luna continues to get braver.

Teddy and his mom have worked hard together and I'm very proud of his progress. Some puppies seem to pull right away and he was one of them. It will be nice to see how his world opens up now that he is managable on leash!
