I don’t think there will ever be enough words to explain how heartbroken I am. Trevor and I said goodbye to our Della girl. 🤎 There is such a strange kind of love that comes with having animals. We love them so deeply that sometimes we become selfish, we want one more day, one more night on the couch, one more ride, one more ordinary moment with them. Eventually, we had to swallow our pride and realize that loving Della meant letting her go. As much as we wanted to keep her here with us, she deserved more than staying here for us. So today, we’re choosing to picture her somewhere she can see again. Somewhere her old body doesn’t hurt, her legs are strong, and she can run like she used to. I didn’t get to meet the version of Della that so many other people knew. I came into her life 4½ years ago, when so much of her story had already been written. But from the very first day I met her, she imprinted herself on my heart. She was my girl. If you knew Della, you loved Della. She was a steady bird dog, a retired duck dog, a professional couch potato, and one of the greatest lovers you could ever meet. By the time I came along, she had earned her retirement, and she quickly became an inside dog, where she continued to earn her keep by holding down the couch and keeping all of us in line. But you could still see that old bird dog in her. Blow a goose call and Della would howl right along with it. She did it until she physically couldn’t anymore, and I think that will forever be one of my favorite sounds. And then there was Babe. Della loved her sister Babe, and she showed that girl the ropes. So much of what Babe knows came from following behind Della. There is something incredibly special, and incredibly painful, about knowing that pieces of Della will continue to live on through her. Pet loss is cruel. They become so woven into our everyday lives that you don’t realize how much space they occupy until suddenly that space is empty. Their spot on the couch. Their footsteps. Their routines. The way you instinctively look for them when you walk into a room. Four and a half years will never feel like enough. I wish I could have known young Della. I wish I could have watched her work the fields and retrieve birds. I wish I could have had every version of her that everyone else got to know. But I am so unbelievably grateful that I got my version of Della. The retired girl. The inside dog. The couch potato. The old lady who stole my heart and somehow became one of the greatest loves of my life. She was my girl, and she always will be. We love you so much, Della. I hope you can see everything now. I hope nothing hurts. I hope there are birds everywhere and somebody up there has a goose call ready for you. And most of all, we are so happy God chose you for us. 🤎 Until we see you again, sweet girl.
