Shep's Place Senior Dog Sanctuary

Shep's Place Senior Dog Sanctuary At Shep's Place, we find old dogs who have gone unadopted in KC shelters, and give them a home.

Shep's Place is a home for abandoned senior dogs from the KC area, who have gone unadopted in shelters or rescues. We are a 501c3 charitable organization staffed entirely by volunteers. Our facility is a refurbished house in Independence, MO, where the dogs roam freely.

* Sugar & Honey *

Yesterday our sweet girl Honey was adopted by her longtime foster, Kristen! She is now officially sisters with another Shep’s alum, Sugar. Besides looking nearly identical, they are both diabetic —ironic, given their names. Kristen monitors their blood sugar constantly, and keeps them both healthy and happy. You found the right place, Honey!

Senior Girl, Serious Business 🎾😂

She may be a senior, but somebody forgot to tell her that.

This girl is busy playing ball, soaking up attention, and living her absolute best life. 🎾❤️

Her motto: Age is just a number. Now THROW THE BALL. 😂🐾

Edit: Still looking!

Looking for something meaningful to do with your free time? Shep’s Place is searching for a volunteer to coordinate the maintenance and upkeep of our pups’ home. Our house is 96 years old, and dogs can be hard on it at times, so we need someone handy to oversee the inevitable small repairs of the building. Maintaining a safe, working home for the dogs is absolutely vital to their well-being, so this is a very important role for our organization. This person would work with our Shelter Manager, Martina, to make sure that the drawers can close, the doors can open and shut, the air filters get changed, and so on. We don’t expect this person to actually DO all the work themselves; we simply need someone to set it up, gather volunteers and materials, and make sure it gets done. For example, our play yard fences have to be restained. We need someone to tell us what supplies to get, pick a date, ask some volunteers to help, and make sure it happens. If that’s not your cup of tea, perhaps you have a spouse or friend who would enjoy it. So get out there and twist some arms! Get ‘em out of the house! If you’d like more information, please send us a message. Thanks!

💔 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.

Not one application. Not one meet & greet. Not one person has said, “He’s my dog.”

He’s smart, loyal, affectionate, and loves his walks, cuddles, and people he trusts. ❤️

His adoption fee is 𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫.

So what’s he waiting for? 𝐘𝐨𝐮? 🐾

Meet Baby. 💕 Sweet as can be, low-energy, and absolutely convinced she is the CEO of approving—or disapproving—everything around here. 😂

And that side eye? Legendary. 👀

Baby may be a senior girl, but she’s still got plenty of personality packed into that sweet face. 🐾❤️

Every time a dog leaves for their forever home... Ambrose watches. 💔

He watches the volunteers celebrate. He watches another dog leave with a family of their own.

And then... he goes back to waiting.

𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐩’𝐬 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐨𝐠 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑.

One whole year of watching other dogs get their happily-ever-afters while he continues to wait.

And we honestly don't understand why.

It isn't because he isn't loving.

It isn't because he isn't smart. In fact, Ambrose is incredibly intelligent. He knows his commands, loves learning new things, enjoys walks and activity, and absolutely loves his people.

It isn't because he doesn't deserve a home.

The truth is, Ambrose needs a little time to trust. His past wasn't always easy, and he doesn't immediately decide that every new person is his best friend.

But once Ambrose chooses you...

𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮.

And that's what makes his love so incredibly special.

When he trusts you, you get to see the goofy, affectionate, loyal dog hiding underneath that cautious first impression. You get the cuddles. The happy moments. The companionship. The look in his eyes that says, "You're my person."

We see that dog every day.

We just need someone else to see him, too.

And now, someone incredibly generous is giving Ambrose an extra chance.

❤️ 𝐀𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐞'𝐬 𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲.

So the financial barrier is gone.

All that's left is finding 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧.

Someone patient enough to let him take his time.

Someone willing to earn his trust instead of expecting it immediately.

Someone who understands that sometimes the most meaningful love stories don't happen at first sight.

Sometimes they happen slowly.

Day by day.

Trust by trust.

Until one day, that dog who was so unsure of you is the dog who can't imagine being without you.

𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫.

Please don't let him start year two still wondering when it will finally be his turn.

Share his story. ❤️

Tag someone who might be Ambrose's person.

And if that's you... come meet him.

Our sweet girl Grammy passed away yesterday, due to a tumor. She was only with us a couple of months, but she was a gentle old gal who quickly became a staff favorite. We’re glad we got to spend time with her.
