‼️First Rabies case reported this summer in Perkins County! ‼️

Please remember to have your pets up to date on their Rabies vaccination!

It not only protects them, but also YOU!

The Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department has confirmed a positive rabies case in a dog in Perkins County. According to the health department, this is the first confirmed rabies case in southwest Nebraska this year.

Rabies is a serious and often fatal disease that affects the nervous system and can spread through the saliva of infected animals. Public health officials are reminding pet owners to make sure their pets’ rabies vaccinations are current.

⚠️ Watch for signs of rabies in animals:
• Sudden behavior changes
• Aggression, snarling, or snapping
• Excessive drooling
• Difficulty eating or drinking
• Wild animals appearing during the day or showing little fear of people

🐶 If your pet is bitten or exposed to a potentially rabid animal, contact your veterinarian immediately.

👤 If you are bitten by an animal:
• Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water
• Seek medical attention right away

Health officials say the best protection against rabies is keeping pets, livestock, and horses up to date on vaccinations.

Have you checked your pets’ vaccination records lately? This is a good reminder to make sure they’re current.
