By the time some owners call me, they are not asking for perfection. They are asking for relief. They just want walks to stop hurting, stop feeling embarrassing, stop feeling like a fight.

“I don’t mind if he walks in front of me…” “Maybe if I can just redirect him…”

We can do way better than that. We’re over here teaching dogs to actually walk with their owners in real life.

What would feel like a huge win for you on a walk right now? I want to hear it in the comments!! 🐾Carla

Your dog doesn’t need to be “fixed” if they’re not broken.

Personally I love working with the high energy dogs that many people find difficult. They were bred to DO something, and no one ever showed them where that energy should go.

So they make up their own job:
barking at the door
herding the kids
patrolling the windows
“protecting” you from totally normal nonthreatening things

That does not mean the dog is broken.

It means the dog needs direction, structure, and an outlet that actually fulfills the kind of dog they are.

Does your dog need fixing, or do they need direction?

Most dogs are not misbehaving because they are bad dogs.

They are acting crazy because they were bred to DO something, and nobody ever showed them where that energy should go.

So they make up their own job: barking at the door, herding the kids, reacting to everything that moves.

That does not mean the dog is broken. Just like an author can’t tell a story without learning the ABCs and honing their craft, dogs need training and an outlet to reach their potential.

Reactive dogs don’t explode out of nowhere.
If you’re waiting until the reaction happens, you’re already too late.

I had a client ask me today, “What do I do when my dog reacts?” And honestly, that’s the wrong question. That question tells me she’s preparing for her dog to react. She’s bracing for impact.

I think of it differently. Not “survive the reaction,” but “I’m going to make it so the dog doesn’t react in the first place.”

Dogs can only focus on one thing at a time. So when your dog checks out, drifts away mentally, or blows off the heel, that’s the moment we address. Because by the time the reaction fully happens, you’re already much later in the picture than you needed to be.

Are you correcting the reaction, or the moment your dog mentally leaves you?
