Is your horse at risk for thrush this fall?

As we head into the cooler, wetter months, it's important to pay a little extra attention to your horse's hooves. Frequent rainstorms and muddy conditions can create the perfect environment for thrush to develop.

What exactly is thrush?

Thrush is a bacterial infection that commonly develops in the frog of a horse's hoof, particularly in the grooves surrounding it. Bacteria thrive in damp, dirty environments where manure, mud, and moisture can become trapped.

Some common signs of thrush include:
🐴 A strong, unpleasant odor coming from the hoof
🐴 Black, foul-smelling discharge around the frog
🐴 Soft or deteriorating frog tissue
🐴 Tenderness or sensitivity when cleaning the hoof

So, where does Spurr's Big Fix come in?

Spurr's Big Fix Antiseptic Spray can be a helpful addition to your hoof-care for both prevention and treatment.

How to apply:

1️⃣ Clean the hoof. Pick out the hoof thoroughly, paying special attention to the central sulcus and the grooves on either side of the frog. Remove trapped dirt, manure, and debris.

2️⃣ Allow the hoof to dry. When possible, give the hoof time to dry before applying your antiseptic.

4️⃣ Keep up with hoof maintenance. Regular cleaning, proper trimming, and reducing prolonged exposure to wet, manure-filled environments are important parts of managing thrush.
