Some people leave behind more than songs. They leave an example.

Today is Dolly Parton Day, and the date couldn't be more perfect. September is the ninth month and today is the 25th, making it 9/25, a nod to 9 to 5. The day celebrates a woman whose music has been part of people's lives for generations, but what I love most is that the celebration reaches far beyond her music.

Dolly grew up with very little in the mountains of East Tennessee, and books were not something her father had been able to enjoy because he couldn't read or write. She started the Imagination Library in 1995 in his honor, sending free books to young children in her home county. What started there eventually grew into a program that has given hundreds of millions of books to children around the world. That's one hell of a thing to build from one small corner of Tennessee.

As an author, that part of her story means something to me. I make books because I believe stories matter, and I can't think of a much better legacy than making sure a kid has books of their own before they're even old enough to understand what those books might eventually mean to them.

So we're doing something a little different to celebrate her. Every dollar from my August book sales is being donated to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in her honor.

Happy Dolly Parton Day.

Today seems like a pretty damn good day to be a little more Dolly.
