MEET THE STAFF!
Our wonderful veterinary assistant, Lisa!
Lisa grew up in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and has been around horses for as long as she can remember. Growing up on a ranch, horses were a big part of her childhood and quickly became a lifelong passion. She grew up riding and showing in both Western and English disciplines and was involved in Pony Club and 4-H, giving her a well-rounded background in horsemanship and horse care.
Lisa is fearless when it comes to working with horses, but she also has a soft and compassionate side that makes her especially good at connecting with them. She has a natural way with horses, and they seem to love her right back. Whether she is working with a nervous horse or handling a more difficult patient, Lisa brings a calm confidence and genuine care to every situation.
Outside of work, Lisa would much rather be outside than anywhere else. She enjoys trail riding, roping, and heading out on pack trips with her horses. She also still enjoys jumping from time to time, although these days it's just for fun and not for competition. Her love for horses and the outdoors is a big part of who she is, and she enjoys just about any excuse to spend time in the saddle.
Lisa brings a lifetime of hands-on horse experience, a strong work ethic, and a big heart for animals to our team. Her confidence, compassion, and ability to make horses feel comfortable are qualities that make her a great part of our practice. We are grateful to have Lisa on our team and know that both our patients and their owners benefit from the care and enthusiasm she brings to her work.

✨ From a tiny embryo to a little horse… in just 55 days!

This is one of those moments in equine reproduction that never gets old. ❤️

At around 55 days of pregnancy, the developing foal has changed dramatically. On ultrasound, we can now see a tiny head, body, and developing limbs—and suddenly, you’re not just looking at a pregnancy anymore. You’re looking at a baby horse. 🐴

It’s incredible to think that this little one has so much growing and developing left to do before we get to meet them, but already, those familiar features are starting to take shape.

For our veterinary team, pregnancy monitoring is an important part of helping mares have the best possible start to a healthy pregnancy. But we have to admit… getting to see these little ones develop along the way is one of the most rewarding parts of the job. 🥰

55 days down, and we can already see the horse they’re becoming.

Ringbone & Pastern Joint Fusion: When Fusion Can Mean Less Pain 🐴

Ringbone is a form of osteoarthritis that develops around the joints of the horse’s pastern. As the disease progresses, inflammation, abnormal bone formation, and degeneration of the joint can lead to significant pain and lameness.

When the pastern joint becomes severely arthritic and painful, arthrodesis (surgical fusion) of the joint may be recommended.

While it may seem counterintuitive to intentionally fuse a joint, the goal is to eliminate the painful motion within a severely arthritic joint. During surgery, the joint surfaces are prepared to encourage the bones to fuse, and the joint is stabilized with internal fixation while the fusion heals. Once fusion is complete, the painful movement associated with the arthritic joint is eliminated.

For appropriately selected horses, pastern joint arthrodesis can be a valuable treatment option when advanced arthritis is causing significant pain and other management options are no longer providing adequate relief.

In this case, the horse was initially evaluated for lameness, and radiographs revealed significant ringbone and degenerative changes affecting the pastern joint. Surgical fusion was recommended, and the procedure was subsequently performed at South Valley Equine.

The horse is currently in the healing process, and we look forward to following his progress as he continues his recovery. 💙

Advanced arthritis can be challenging, but in carefully selected cases, eliminating painful joint motion can offer a path toward improved comfort and function.

MEET THE STAFF!
Our amazing veterinary assistant, Lily.
Lily grew up in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and has been around horses since she was three years old. Horses have always been a huge part of her life, and she started competing in rodeo at just 10 years old. She spent much of her childhood and teenage years with her horses, Dolly, Liberty, and Duchess, as well as her dog, Dexter. Her love for horses eventually led her to ranching, where she gained even more hands-on experience and learned the value of hard work and caring for animals.
Over the years, Lily has competed in a wide variety of events, including barrels, breakaway roping, goat tying, pole bending, and team roping. She has spent 15 years competing in barrels and two years in team roping, and she has also had experience with reining, cow horse, and cutting horses. One of the experiences she is especially proud of is adopting and training her own Mustang, Liberty. Traveling from state to state for rodeos has given Lily the opportunity to see new places, meet new people, and continue growing her experience with horses.
Lily's passion for horses goes far beyond competition. She genuinely enjoys working with and helping other people's horses and loves being able to put her experience to work caring for them. Horses have been a constant part of her life for many years, and she enjoys the opportunity to continue learning from them and helping others with their horses whenever she can.
When she isn't working, Lily enjoys spending time with her family and friends, going to rodeos, trail riding, and exploring different parts of the country. She especially enjoys the chance to see new places and experience them alongside her horses. We are grateful to have Lily as part of our team and appreciate the experience, enthusiasm, and genuine love for horses that she brings with her every day.

Our technicians spend their days caring for everyone else’s horses, but every now and then, their own four-legged family members need a little extra TLC too!

We love getting to care for the horses who are closest to our team’s hearts. From the exam room to the barn, we know how much these animals mean to their people—and we’re honored to be trusted with their care.

Turns out even veterinary staff horses like to keep us on our toes! 😉🐴

🐴👁️ Cloudy eye? It could be more than irritation.

Eosinophilic keratitis is an uncommon but important eye condition in horses. It causes inflammation of the cornea (the clear surface of the eye), often resulting in a white or yellowish plaque, cloudiness, redness, tearing, squinting, and sensitivity to light.

The exact cause isn’t always known, but it is thought to involve an abnormal immune response and may be associated with allergies, environmental triggers, insect exposure, or other factors. Because several eye conditions can look similar, a thorough veterinary eye exam is important to confirm the diagnosis and start the right treatment.

Treatment for eosinophilic keratitis is aimed at reducing inflammation, controlling discomfort, and preventing recurrence. Depending on the individual horse, treatment may include topical medications applied directly to the eye, such as anti-inflammatory or immune-modulating medications, along with medications to keep the eye comfortable and support healing. Some horses may require treatment for several weeks or longer, with adjustments based on how the eye responds.

☀️ UV protection is also a very important part of long-term management. Horses with eosinophilic keratitis are often sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light, which can contribute to flare-ups. These horses should wear a UV-blocking (UV Free) fly mask whenever they are outside to help protect the eye and reduce irritation.

With early diagnosis, consistent treatment, and good management, many horses can remain comfortable and maintain good vision.

👀 If your horse develops a cloudy eye, excessive tearing, squinting, or sensitivity to sunlight, don’t wait to have it checked. Eye problems in horses are an emergency and can worsen very quickly, so immediate veterinary attention is essential to protect vision and comfort.
