Today, we’re celebrating Lily, the newest addition to our Teton Equine family! 🐴

Although Lily is the newest face on our team, she has already shown us what an asset she is. We’ve really appreciated the confidence she brings when working with horses, along with her willingness to take on new challenges, ask questions, and put in the hard work it takes to improve.

Equine medicine is not always easy, and having someone who is eager to learn, willing to work hard, and ready to jump in wherever needed makes a difference!

Today, we want to take a moment to show some extra appreciation for Allie, one of our amazing veterinary technicians!

Allie is one of those people you can count on to show up ready to work, put in the effort, and keep going until the job is done. No matter what the day brings, she works hard from start to finish and is always a big support to our team. In equine medicine, the days can be long, the work can be tough, and no two days look the same. Having someone who consistently shows up, gives her best, and helps keep everything moving is something we never take for granted.

Being a vet tech is about so much more than what happens in an exam or treatment. It takes dedication, compassion, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to jump in wherever you're needed. Allie brings so much to our team, and the care she gives our patients and the support she gives the rest of us make a difference every single day.

Yes… horses can break their noses! 😳🐴

And this handsome guy is proof!

This horse suffered a fracture to his nose. There was some bleeding and swelling associated with the injury, but thankfully, it was not a significant fracture and he has made a great recovery. ❤️‍🩹

So, what about breathing?

Because horses have much larger nasal passages than we do, a fracture or change in the shape of the nasal bones doesn't necessarily interfere with breathing in the same way it might in a person. Of course, the location and severity of the fracture matter, and nasal injuries should always be evaluated by a veterinarian.

In this case, he healed well and is back to his normal horse life. You can still see the spot where the break occurred, though!

A little reminder that horses are pretty remarkable creatures—and sometimes an injury can leave a visible reminder long after the horse has moved on. 🐴💙

🩹 Sometimes, it’s not just the wound… it’s WHERE the wound is.

This wound was located on the front of the hock, an area that gets a LOT of movement every time a horse walks, trots, lays down, gets up, or generally does… horse things. 🐴

That constant motion can make healing a little more challenging. Every time the hock bends, the skin and tissues around the wound are moving right along with it. That movement can put tension on the healing tissues and make it harder for the wound to close and heal properly.

As part of this horse’s treatment, the wound was debrided and cleaned up, and a pressure bandage was applied to help protect the area, manage swelling, and provide support while the wound healed.

Wounds over joints can require a little more patience and a little more strategy. Sometimes it isn't just about treating the wound itself—it’s about managing the environment around it and giving those tissues the best chance to heal.

And of course, keeping a horse from moving a joint that is designed to move all day long? Easier said than done. 😂🐴

🏆 A BIG congratulations to one of our very own! 🏆

We couldn’t be more proud of Hes Pullin Gs, who just took home the win in the Utah Classic Derby! 🎉

Registered as Hes Pullin Gs, but much better known around our clinic as Bojack — or simply “Bo” to his Teton Equine family. ❤️

Bo is owned by one of our own technicians, Sarah, and her boyfriend, Dabid, so getting to watch him succeed makes this win feel a little extra special for our whole crew.

From the barn to the track, Bo has put in the work, and seeing it all come together in a win like this is something worth celebrating. We are incredibly proud of this talented athlete and the people standing behind him!

Congratulations, Bo, Sarah, and Dabid! We’ll be cheering you on for whatever comes next! 🏇

If you ever wondered whether Dr. Abby has a soft spot for mules… we have photographic evidence. 😂🫏❤️

There’s just something about a good mule that Dr. Abby can’t resist—and apparently, a mule statue is no exception. 🤣

But her love for mules goes quite a bit further than hugging statues. Dr. Abby owns mules of her own and prefers riding them through the mountains when she’s out hunting. 🏔️🫏

So when you see her getting a little too excited about a mule that she gets to treat, just know… this is not a phase. 😂

Mules are smart, tough, sure-footed, and just enough of their own personality to keep things interesting—which might explain why Dr. Abby likes them so much.

We are an equine veterinary clinic, and around here, the mules absolutely get plenty of love, too. ❤️ (whether they want it or not! 😜)

And yes… we will continue to document Dr. Abby’s mule obsession whenever the opportunity presents itself. 😉

We have to give a HUGE shout-out to our client Kinsey Walz and the two very talented horses keeping her busy in the arena—Hope and H***y Tonk Dreams! 🐴🔥

Kinsey & Hope have been on an absolute roll in pole bending!
🏆 NLBRA Senior Poles World Champion
🏆 4th in the World at NHSFR
🏆 Currently #1 in Nebraska High School Pole Bending standings

And then there’s H***y Tonk Dreams, who is proving that Hope isn't the only one bringing home the bragging rights!

Two horses. Two events. A whole lot of hard work. And some pretty impressive results. 👏

We love seeing our patients out there doing their thing, and we’re especially proud when we get to watch one of our clients put in the work and make BIG things happen with their horses.

💙🖤 Why is my horse’s mouth turning blue or black?!

If you’ve ever looked inside your horse’s mouth after they’ve been grazing and thought, “Umm… was that always that color?” — you’re not alone!

Certain grasses can contain resin-like plant compounds that can temporarily stain the tissues inside a horse’s mouth. As your horse chews and grazes, these compounds can leave the lips, gums, tongue, and other areas of the mouth looking blue, purple, gray, or even nearly black.

It can look pretty dramatic — but in many cases, this discoloration is simply plant staining and will fade as the horse stops eating the grass and the pigments wear away.

🌱 So what should you do?

Take a good look at your horse and pay attention to the whole picture. If your horse is otherwise acting normally, eating normally, and showing no signs of mouth pain, the color change may simply be from what they’ve been grazing on.

However, not every change in mouth color is caused by grass, so if you’re unsure, it’s always worth having your veterinarian take a look — especially if the discoloration persists or your horse is showing other symptoms.

Sometimes horses really do leave clues about what they’ve been eating… and occasionally those clues are very, very blue. 😂💙
