You may have noticed our milk tastes slightly different at the moment. This is due to the dairy girls now being fed 100% pasture (versus hay)!

🌱 Fresh grass in their diet adds more natural sugars and plant compounds, giving the milk a richer, sweeter, and herbaceous taste. As the cows' digestive systems adjust to the new diet, the flavor may temporarily shift, potentially introducing earthy and herbal notes.

💛 The high levels of beta-carotene in the grass also cause the milk to have a more yellow or golden color, especially in the spring.

Our Milkplan cooling tank arrived today! We are so grateful to receive this new infrastructure from Homesteader's Supply (thank you, Jeri 😊) with the help of a grant from the West Virginia Food & Farm Coalition (thank you, Melissa 😊)!

Not only will this 30-gallon stainless steel tank save us time and hassle in the straining, cooling, AND bottling processes, BUT it will improve the integrity of our raw milk. It’ll ensure your milk is cooled as quickly and evenly as possible and that the cream is distributed evenly throughout. We are so giddy to use this!

BONUS: The boys benefitted too, with a playhouse!! It’s safe to say they are as thrilled as we are. Now
—> onto delving into the instruction manual for the MilkPlan and designing a playhouse with the little guys! 🩵

Fun Farm Fact: Today is National Farm Animals Day.
From cattle and sheep to chickens, goats, and pigs, farm animals play an important role in agriculture and in the food and products we rely on every day. Animal agriculture is a major part of farming, it supports food production, local economies, and the use of crop and forage lands.

Today, we celebrate the animals that help keep agriculture moving. 🐄🐑🐓

We had some milk from 3/13 we didn’t think chilled in a timely manner (38 degrees or below within 2 hours). We kept it aside till today, 3/24, to skim cream for our personal use, and it still tasted great!

Some tips for keeping your raw milk tasting fresh:
~> Store it in the coolest part of your fridge
~> Set your fridge to 38 degrees or below
~> Don’t leave your milk on the counter 🙃
~> Store your milk in sanitized glass, not plastic
~> Keep your milk on ice and in a cooler when transporting

📣 We guarantee our milk crisp tasting for a minimum of 7 days post-milking (of course, as long as you’ve done your job to keep it cool) 😊

📣 Keep an eye out for a future post with ideas for using “older” milk!
