🐾 Is your dog "wildly friendly"? 🐾

We love their enthusiasm, but when Fido turns into a 50-pound launching pad with sharp nails, those exciting greetings can quickly become dangerous—especially for kids or grandma!

In our this blog post, we dive deep into why dogs jump and how you can retrain them using smart, force-free methods.

Here is a quick breakdown of what you need to know:

💡 Why Do They Do It?
The simple answer is attention. To a dog, even yelling "no" or pushing them off can feel like a fun game or a reward. When we give them attention for jumping, we accidentally reinforce the behavior.

🛑 How to Fix It

🐾Completely Ignore It: Turn your back and remove your attention the second they jump.

🫘The "Food Scatter" Game: Introduce a cue like "Scatter!" and toss a handful of treats on the floor. Foraging for food is way more exciting than jumping on guests!

🎗️Use a Leash: Keep your dog leashed when guests arrive, and only let them move closer to the visitor when your dog shows calm behavior.

❄️Crate & Chill: Give your dog a stuffed Kong or a special chew in their crate before guests arrive to help them control their initial excitement.

Remember, if your dog has been jumping for months, it won't change overnight! Stay consistent, ride out the "extinction burst" (where they try even harder before giving up), and always reward calm behavior.

Did someone say picnic?! 🧺

🐾 Happy International Picnic Day!

There is nothing better than packing up some treats, grabbing a blanket, and heading outside with your favorite four-legged co-pilot. Whether it's a park hangout or a backyard lounge, dogs make the absolute best picnic partners (even if they do try to steal your sandwich). 🥪🐶

In many of my Private Lessons we discuss this! Many people think their dog is being “aggressive” or being “protective.” In a way, the dog is, but not in the way you think they are. The dog is often times “acting out” due to fearfulness.

This is when we use confidence building games and compassion to build the dog’s self esteem and help the owner re-think training methods for other common behavior problems!

A fearful dog can be a dangerous one! If you see that your dog is showing signs of stress, anxiety or fear take them seriously.

They can react aggressively even if it's uncharacteristic of them.

I recommend a DOWN to STAND to many of my clients. The reason why is because it is SO beneficial! It is a total body workout with two simple movements.

Let's first look at good form. I like a "Fold Back Down" and then the dog needs to push straight back up into the stand without moving their feet. I do not want to see them walk up into the stand. It is likely that they will do this at first.

In this video, I have two demo dogs, Shadow is a beginner who just learned how to perform this exercise two days before I filmed this video, and Kiely who has been doing doing this exercise her whole life (she's 6.5 years older now).

🌟Reminder, always perform exercises on non-slip surfaces, where the dog does not have to worry about getting hurt!🌟

1️⃣ Make sure your dog is lined up straight in front of you. You may have to throw a cookie out and let the dog get it. Then lure the dog in front of you.

2️⃣ Keep the hand with the cookies at the natural height of the dog's nose. Take one cookie out of your hand.

3️⃣Use the one cookie from your hand and lure the dog's nose between his/her elbows (or chin to chest, whichever is easier to remember). If this is a new dog to this exercise, you may need to hold the treat there for several seconds.

4️⃣ Once the dog lays down, give the treat.

5️⃣ Take another treat from your hand, and lure the dog's nose up and towards you 45 degrees. The dog will stand up. Then reward.

5️⃣a. If the dog automatically stands up because your hand with a bunch of treats is right there, that is okay!

6️⃣ Repeat for 9 more reps!

I generally do NOT give cues to my dogs and here's a good blog post on why I don't: https://endlesspaws.net/blog/nom-nom-nom-cookie-use-in-canine-fitness/
