Hidden Quartz Farm

Hidden Quartz Farm Where animals and people learn to appreciate and respect each other for a fun farm experience.

Teaching children to respect animals and building confidence and team building skills. We are a small, privately owned farm sharing our love of horses through riding lessons and group visits to the farm. Bring out your daycamp for a field trip to the country or have your horse crazy kid's birthday party at the farm. Our farm is our home so your visit will be personal and we are very "non-commercial". A great place to get away from the busy hustle and bustle of city life!

Well, what’s a farm without a pig? And while we said we wouldn’t-we did! And then did twice😆 Truffles and Snuffles!

These are kunekune pigs, and they are grazers and not rooters so we gave in!

Info:
Kunekune (pronounced "koo-nee koo-nee") are a small, docile breed of domestic pig from New Zealand, known for their grazing ability, hairy coats, and unique tassels (pīpī) hanging from their lower jaw.

They are popular as pets and on small farms due to their placid nature, intelligence, and lower maintenance needs compared to other breeds, as they can thrive on grass and require less rooting. Their coat colors vary widely, and they are known for excellent meat quality with good marbling.

Key Characteristics

Appearance: Varying colors (black, brown, gold, cream, spotted), short to long hair, and distinctive tassels (pīpī).
Temperament: Sociable, affectionate, intelligent, and generally placid, making them good companions.

Diet: Primarily grazers, eating grass and forage, but need supplemental feed, especially in winter.
Rooting: Less prone to rooting than other breeds, causing less damage to enclosures.

Size: Smaller than commercial breeds

My first chickens when we bought the farm were Buff Brahmas! The last of that flock left the farm to chicken heaven yesterday. Their average lifespan is 5 to 8 years but 10 years with “exceptional care”. I wouldn’t call my chicken care exceptional, but hey get fed, they have a coop and they get to run the yard during the day. I don’t even think she was laying anymore and she was more like pushing 11 years old. But the little old lady chicken was here. She didn’t look good on Monday, so gave her a little bit of TLC and separated her and she passed away overnight. Yeah it’s just a chicken, but I just thought she deserved a post.
