The weather for our region has been uncharacteristically cool. And now things are rapidly warming up to typical temperatures.

Be mindful of your dogs (and yourself) as you acclimate to summer weather. Mornings and evenings will be most hospitable for exposure. For working dogs, be intentional about steadily increasing time in the heat. And learn what symptoms of heat distress look like and how to effectively treat it!

Prevention and preparation are far easier than recovery from heat injuries.

CGC certification is such a great attainable goal for most dogs. It provides a baseline of public access behavior to work toward while building your relationship with your canine family member along the way.

Congratulations to these two on certification and pursuing their goals in SAR and agility/obedience!

Rescue dogs are a special breed that will always have a spot in my heart. They bring the best sort of love but can also bring some complicated behaviors.

Miss Ivy is a rescue who came with leash reactivity that was making her daily apartment activities challenging and stressful for her and her owner.

We were able to quickly identify that anxiety was the root cause of her acting out. And then we got to find the joy in building up a dog's confidence with place training, reinforcement, consistent boundaries, and engagement.

The transformation was beyond exciting. A dog that wouldn't even acknowledge her owner before, now chooses to check in and engage over reacting to other people and dogs!

Her owner related that she now looks forward to walks and feels like Ivy is a totally different dog.

I'd argue she isn't different. Ivy is now finally herself: a happy sweet labrador with an owner who now enjoys her even more than before.

My first exposure to cooperative care was in my wonderful job at a vet facility.

It revolutionized how I trained.

They shifted my mentality to training ahead. Why was I waiting for vet visits to then force my dogs onto new surfaces and confined areas? Why was I waiting for big distractions to then reinforce engagement? Why were muzzles a last minute tool to shove on my dogs in already high stress situations?

I KNEW these situations were inevitable. Why was I reactively rather than proactively training?

Cooperative care was the liaison to facilitating the trust I wanted to see in the dogs around me.

The results were dogs that were resilient, bonds that transcended stressful situations, and handlers that were confident and prepared.

Happy Mother's Day to the maternal figures of every calling and capacity.

It is a day that some of us celebrate, some of us grieve, some of us wish for, and some of us ache over. And I hope you find beauty today whether it is in hugging the kiddos or critters, taking a hike, reading a book, imbibing coffee, or sitting in solitude.

Mother Strong is something to be proud of. May you love and be loved.

Fear is a challenging emotion to navigate for dogs... and humans.

In sweet Nora's case, multiple trainers had suggested countering her behavior with force and even a shock collar. A dog that is so fearful that she can only hide or run is not a dog that can process negative reinforcement productively. You can't force a dog to be not afraid.

But. You can build trust. You can reward curiosity. You can expand their world one little adventure at a time. Will it happen overnight? Nope. It will be painstakingly slow some days.

But then one day you find yourself in public with your dog sitting in place and absorbing her world of noises and strangers calmly. And you know the work was absolutely worth it.

Training is about a relationship. We can teach all the cool “bells and whistles” tricks we want, but if we don’t develop a relationship with the dog in the process we’ll struggle to see those things stick long term.

The relationship we are building is just like any relationship with another human, there are set boundaries, rewards, respect, corrections, calling each other out, and supporting each others success.

When those things are established in the foundation, the training takes on more value for the dog and, as a result, their human.
