It was another fantastic year at ILMS Safety Town teaching dog bite prevention. As always - Cobb and Summit loved visiting the little Laker friends!

It was a beautiful day outside and we were happy to enjoy it with Maverick working on “OUT” with a little extra space. Previously, Maverick has struggled with being far too intense when he played- vocalizing, mouthing and snatching toys. Today we had a chance to fine tune the “OUT” command so that he not only drops the ball but also steps back to provide space and does an automatic down while patiently waiting for the next toss. This skill is a great way to combine training with fun but also a great to build clearer thoughts which can come in handy to help control prey drive, reactivity and anxious behaviors.

Just ask Pepper- training can be fun!

Pepper came to us as a really good boy but struggling with some pretty bad manners, especially when it came to saying “hi” - he just couldn’t keep his paws to himself. He started off slow because he was a pretty sensitive boy but after just a couple of days figuring us out and he has been thriving ever since. His newly found impulse control is remarkable and his personality is an even better version of who he already was. We hope he has earned himself a lot of future “good boy” adventures!

There are puppies - and then there are WORKING LINE puppies! Meet Sayble - a very sweet, very smart and VERY HIGH DRIVE German Shepherd puppy. It is going to take a lot to keep this growing girl busy, so we have been having fun teaching her some advanced obedience commands, off-leash reliability and how to incorporate impulse control into playtime.

Meet Bethany! To say this very young girl has had a very rough life would be an understatement! When most dogs her age were being potty trained, getting their adult teeth and learning how to walk nicely on a leash - Bethany was undergoing a full leg amputation due to an encounter with a lawn mower and a not so friendly human. Needless to say, a pretty healthy fear of people (especially men) has presented itself in the way of fear aggression with strangers and household members. In addition, she resource guards her mom who took her in as a foster and nursed her through her recover then later adopted her.
Although we generally try not to get hung up on a dog’s history and rather focus on their future when developing training goals- a strategy involving patience, trust and physical adaptations had to be considered for this sweet young girl. She may never be an obedience super star, but Bethany has worked hard on achieving a more neutral state of mind, becoming far more accepting of strangers and even showing courage to explore situations that before would have been far too traumatic for her.
This video may not seem like much to most people, but previously Bethany could be seen aggressively lunging and barking at her new adoptive dad, herding kids around the house and generously sharing barks and growls when seeing or meeting new people. We are very proud of the progress she has made thus far and can not wait to see how much more she can achieve.
A special thank you to Joe for always being brave and helping us with the “boys are scary” cases.

Noki’s parents may think they are taking home the wrong dog at pick up this Friday. This young boy was full of SPIRIT, ENERGY and a lot of BAD MANNERS- but look at him now. We are SOOOO PROUD of this sweet boy! ♥️ This was his first time meeting our staff dog Summit and after a polite play session, Noki was able to switch back into work mode and hold his “place” command even with another dog walking around him.

If you have a young dog that is ALL PUPPY, don’t just accept that as normal. Set boundaries, communicate clearly and give us a call to help you get started on the right paw!🐾
