Golden Paw Society, Inc. GPS: Helping Shelter Cats Find Their Way Into Forever Homes

We rescue cats from kill shelters and care for them at our adoption center until they are adopted.

Follow along and be a virtual part of our rescue mission! Located in Huntington NY Our shelters are filled to capacity with homeless, displaced cats; cats of all ages, many adults, who either sit for several months (day in, day out) waiting to be discovered and who are at-risk of being euthanized if they have or develop health issues or exhibit too much stress in captivity. Regardless of condition

s, no shelter cage is a happy or appropriate place for a cat to be in and cats suffer tremendously in the shelter setting, often surrounded by loud, barking dogs. In order to help us fulfill our mission, we have created a cat center for the cats we rescue! This is a true home-away- from-home for the cats to enjoy while we continue the work of finding homes for them. In our care, each cat we rescue is kept safe, comfortable and tended to medically and emotionally in preparation for adoption. Here, it’s all about the cats, and it’s about letting each one of them know they are wanted and wonderful even though somebody at some point in their lives decided they weren’t. One thing we know for sure: Whatever condition the cats are in when we remove them from the shelter setting, without fail they each begin to transform and come into their own and become the cats they are meant to be. It's an amazing and beautiful thing to see, and once they are adopted they transform even more. THIS is the beauty in what we do and this is the thing that keeps us driven to continue to do more. We are so proud and so excited to be doing this, and we ask for your support. Please visit our website at www.goldenpawsociety.org to see if there is a way you may be able to help us…So many homeless and hopeless cats will appreciate it, as will we!

Guyyyyyyys!!!

I just spent A. YEAR. AND. A. HALF. in a windowless kennel in a municipal shelter and look at me now!!!

You can't tell by looking at me now but at the shelter I was getting so depressed that I stopped grooming. Basically I was giving up because my life was looking really dark and lonely. 😞 Everyone there was concerned about me but there was nothing anybody could do because I was caught up in a horrible court case.

But don't feel sorry for me!! That was then and this is now and THIS is awesome! 🤩

So many rooms! So many windows! Volunteers loving me and brushing me and a bunch of crazy cats to meet! I've settled into life at this Adoption Center in no time at all but I've got my eye on bigger things! I'm talkin' about forever home with you!! 🥰😍

10-12yo Carl is a gentle giant who loves to be held and snuggled up with! You must meet this cat! To meet him is to love him and hopefully adopt him so let's go!

A sad chapter finally came to an end yesterday for three innocent beings who never deserved to be part of it.

We all hear about "hoarding houses" in the news. The headlines and the horror upon discovery, the clearing of the animals from the scene and then - everyone seemingly moves on.

What happens next to the animals involved? They're brought to shelters where they are evaluated, receive medical care and, once healthy, become available for adoption. Sounds good right?

Except the part nobody talks about is when the original owner of the animals wants their animals back and it becomes a court case, leaving the animals in a state of limbo with no way to move forward. They are literally stuck living at a municipal shelter until the court case has been resolved, which can take years.

This happens more often than you can imagine and it is a travesty.

This is exactly what happened to these three senior cats. We met them a year and a half ago, when they were first removed from a terrible hoarding situation with several other cats and brought to a town shelter. We wanted them the day we met them - beautiful seniors who'd been through who-knows-how-many-years of hell living in crappy conditions - but these three were the former owner's favorites and the owner refused to legally relinquish them.

The good news is that, after a few months of cage life, they were able to live more freely in kennel rooms for the past year or so - which is better than living behind bars but still no comforts of home, no daylight, no normalcy and certainly no way for senior cats to be wasting away their golden days.

The better news is that we finally got the OK to get them and bring them into our care at our Adoption Center!

Yesterday, while joyfully on our way to finally get this trio, we got the sad news that the world had lost Dolly Parton - an amazing human, humanitarian and animal advocate who believed, as we do, that:

"Animals have hearts too. They deserve love just like people do." D. Parton

Dolly Parton was married to Carl Dean for 59 years.
In honor of her amazing life and her big love, and in celebration of the long-awaited liberation of these three senior fur-people, we welcome Dolly, Carl and Dean to Golden Paw Society.

The best is yet to come for this trio!

"Y'all wanna hear a bad cat joke? Just kitten! 😹"

Dolly Parton posted this joke and picture to her FB page in 2022. :)

Thanks to Dolly, the world was a better, kinder, sweeter, funnier place. It's actually hard to imagine a world without her. She passed away just yesterday at the age of 80, after a lifetime of not just entertaining us with her songs and her music but also consistently demonstrating authenticity, kindness, generosity and compassion for all living beings. She had style, class and a heart of gold!

Thank you, Dolly. We know your legacy will continue to make life better for others.

We have a special honor for Dolly coming up so stay tuned!!

TIME FLIES WHEN YOU'RE SAVING LIVES!

Today we celebrate our FOURTEEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!!

Fourteen years ago today, we officially became a registered not-for-profit charitable organization in the State of New York.

Our mission: To change the plight of shelter cats across Long Island.

The plight: Adult and senior cats losing their homes for any number of reasons, and finding themselves alone and terrified in municipal shelter cages where they sit languishing for months (and sometimes years) and/or at risk of being euthanized.

We started as two women determined to succeed and make a difference - no money but BIG ideas. We first rented, and have since bought, our Cat Adoption Center, a house that is dedicated to the cats we rescue with a current team of 56 volunteers to take care of them.

To date, we have rescued 3849 shelter cats.
Some have remained with us forever due to a variety of health or behavioral reasons that deem them unsuitable for adoption. For these cats, we offer sanctuary.
We have also suffered many losses, which never gets easy but is to be expected when working with such a vulnerable population.
Most of our rescued cats have moved on to be successfully adopted into forever homes.

Whatever the outcome, the goal has always been to remove cats from the shelter setting and ensure that they never again feel the pain of isolation and abandonment. No cat deserves to live, or die, alone with such pain.

Every little feline soul we have met has been an amazing reminder of how precious and fragile life is, and of how deserving of love EVERYone is. Everyone comes with different needs and different personalities but every individual deserves to be acknowledged and loved for who they are and helped along the way.

This is why we are here, and this is why we love what we do. :)

Every bit of what we have been able to accomplish is thanks to you, our supporters who believe in our mission. Without you, there would be no Golden Paw Society and that is not an exaggeration. So thank you, thank YOU for being here with us and for making dreams come true for us and for the cats we rescue. Our hearts are filled with awe and gratitude that so many people have decided that what we are doing is worthy of support.

So bring out the party hats and let's blow some horns! (not real horns, cats don't like noise!) Here's to so many more amazing cats getting the second chances they deserve!!!

Momo has spoken.

Our recently rescued senior has decided she is done with the crate and she is ready to take over the world.

In her travels around our adoption center Momo came upon this pillow and, just like the pretty princess that she is, promptly placed herself on top of it and here she sits - ready to receive visitors as we see fit.

Few things are as rewarding as bringing a senior cat into your home. One who has known home, has lost everything and would give anything to have home again.

The love they have to share is unconditional, the gratitude they express is as genuine as it gets and the blessings of your connection last forever.

Let's make this happen for Momo. Come adopt this beauty or share this post to connect her to the human who will.

❤️

Available now when Huntington Station New York.

Monday with Momo.

The GPS humans took a brief posting hiatus but the cat care here is 24/7 round the clock going on behind the scenes at all times.

When last you heard from us we had been on our way to rescue this senior girly who's recovering from a procedure to remove squamous cell carcinoma from her neck.

We got the girl... and if you've known us long enough you know we've never entered a shelter for one cat and left with just one....so we have a handful of other furry friends to introduce you to! 😁

Momo has been slowly but surely adjusting to us but then she developed a wicked cold which had her feeling miserable for a few days. She is finally on the tail end of that and we look forward to watching her get much more comfortable and start to shine. 🌟

Stay tuned to meet the others and for more good stuff coming up!
