Greetings are exciting, especially when you’re a puppy who loves people.

Cooper is learning that saying hello doesn’t have to mean rushing toward someone or jumping up. Instead, we’re helping him practice a calm, predictable way to greet people while still getting to enjoy the social interaction he loves.

By reinforcing a sit before pets, we’re showing Cooper what works and giving him a skill he can continue to build as he grows.

It’s not about taking away the excitement. It’s about helping our puppies learn how to navigate that excitement with a little more calm, confidence, and communication.

Your puppy is learning about the world from the very beginning.

Those early weeks are an important time for thoughtful socialization and exposure, and being in the middle of their vaccination series does not mean every experience has to wait.

For puppies like Koda, a stroller can be a great way to safely experience new environments while limiting contact with the ground in higher risk areas.

He can watch people and dogs pass by, hear traffic and unfamiliar sounds, see bikes and skateboards, visit new places, and simply observe the world around him without needing to interact with everything he sees.

Socialization is not about meeting as many people and dogs as possible. It is about giving puppies thoughtful, positive opportunities to experience the sights, sounds, environments, and everyday situations that will be part of their lives.

Sometimes that means exploring on their own four paws. Other times, it can look exactly like this: riding safely in a stroller and taking it all in.

Your puppy may not be fully vaccinated yet, but there are still ways to thoughtfully begin helping them learn about their world. Talk with your veterinarian about appropriate precautions for your puppy and your area while they complete their vaccination series.

Training does not stop when the school day ends.

During Hazel’s transfer lesson, her mom gets hands on practice with the skills Hazel has been learning at school, with guidance from her trainer along the way.

Transfer lessons help bridge the gap between school and home. Hazel gets the opportunity to practice familiar skills with her mom, while her mom learns how to communicate with her, reinforce those skills, and continue building on them outside of school.

Because our goal is not just for Hazel to be successful with her trainers. We want Hazel and her family to have the tools to be successful together in everyday life.

Sometimes enrichment looks like a cardboard box and a few hidden treats.

As Koda works to figure out how to get to the treats inside, he is using his nose, exploring different approaches, and problem solving along the way.

Activities like this give Koda opportunities to think independently, work through something new, and build confidence through successful experiences.

Because learning is about so much more than practicing cues. It is also about helping our students become curious, confident problem solvers who are ready to navigate the world around them.

This is your sign that you don’t have to wait until your puppy is fully vaccinated to start training.

Meet Koda, one of our undervaccinated puppy students! While he continues his vaccination series, he can safely begin learning in our designated puppy area.

Walking skills, settling on a mat, and engagement are just a few of the things you’ll see Koda practicing here and only a small part of what he’ll be learning throughout his training with us.

Our students are building skills that support everyday life and future adventures with their families, from neighborhood walks and coffee shop visits to weekend outings and wherever life takes them together. For Koda, these early experiences give us the opportunity to begin building that foundation through positive reinforcement while supporting his confidence, learning, and development along the way.

SO PROUD OF THESE TEAMS.

Adolescence can be one of the hardest stages of raising a dog. Their brains are changing, distractions suddenly feel more important, and skills that seemed easy yesterday can feel a whole lot harder today.

Now add an airport.

Rolling suitcases, crowds of people, automatic doors, elevators, kiosks, conversations, strange sounds, tight spaces and constant movement. This is a HARD environment for an adolescent dog.

And these teams showed up and practiced.

Not perfection. Practice.

They worked on walking together, settling while the world moved around them, waiting in line, checking in with their person, navigating elevators and simply learning how to be calm in a busy public space.

We could not be more proud of both ends of the leash.

These are the experiences that help build calm, confident dogs you can take everywhere and anywhere.

Keep showing up. Keep practicing. Keep making it fun.

Your adolescent dog is still learning, and every positive experience like this matters.

Koda got his very first haircut (Unicorn Pet Grooming Salon ) and we could not be more proud of him.

When we picked him up, the groomers could not stop talking about how well he did. He was comfortable being handled, accepted the grooming process beautifully, and apparently decided that the water was one of the best parts of the entire experience.

That is exactly what we want.

Grooming is something our dogs will experience throughout their lives, so we want those first experiences to feel safe, predictable, and positive.

Long before the first full haircut, we can help puppies get comfortable with having their paws touched, ears handled, bodies brushed, faces held gently, nail tools introduced, and the sounds and sensations that come with grooming.

The goal is not simply to have a dog who tolerates grooming.

We want a dog who feels comfortable participating in the process.

For Koda, his first grooming appointment became less of a stressful event and more like his very own spa day.

These little experiences matter. They help build the confident, well mannered family dogs we want to take everywhere and anywhere.

Great job, Koda.

QUICK FUNNY STORY 🤪

Less than one minute after Koda got back to the house with his fresh new haircut, he jumped straight into the kiddie pool and got completely soaking wet.

So much for the fresh blowout.

Apparently Koda decided his spa day needed one final water treatment.

Sometimes the skills that look the most fun can have a purpose in everyday life.

Yuca is practicing catching treats with her trainer, and while it may look like a simple game, it can become a helpful skill to have in your training toolbox.

For dogs who may feel nervous or unsure about something in their environment, a familiar game like catch can give them something positive and predictable to engage with while they navigate what is happening around them.

It can also help build engagement between you and your dog while creating positive experiences in new or more challenging environments.

Training does not always have to look like practicing walking skills, recall, or settling. Sometimes a simple game can help build skills that support your dog in everyday life.

Adolescence can feel like the stage where your dog suddenly forgets everything you taught them.

They are more curious. More distracted. More independent. The world feels bigger and much more interesting.

Don’t give up on them. They’re having a hard time, not giving you a hard time.
These adolescent students spent time at Centinela practicing real world skills like loose leash walking, settling calmly around distractions, checking in with their handler, and even recall.

None of these skills happen overnight. They are built through repetition, patience, positive experiences, and lots of practice in the environments where we actually need them.
Adolescence is a stage, not your finished dog.

Keep showing up. Keep practicing. Keep building the relationship.

With time and consistency, you will get through this stage together, and all of that work starts turning into the calm, confident dog you can take everywhere and anywhere.

Meet Faye, a 5-month-old Mini Bernedoodle student.

Faye joined our All-Day School program at the beginning of June as an under-vaccinated puppy. Since she wasn’t fully vaccinated yet, she started in our puppy area, where she could safely begin learning without walking on public ground.

Over the past few months, we’ve been supporting Faye as she learns the skills that will help her navigate everyday life with her family. She’s been practicing walking skills, recall, settling, impulse control, and becoming more comfortable with handling for grooming and everyday care.

Now that Faye is fully vaccinated, her world is getting bigger! She has graduated to our main floor and can practice what she’s learned in different environments and around more of the everyday distractions she’ll experience with her family.

These experiences give Faye opportunities to keep learning at her own pace while building the skills that can support her in being a happy, well-mannered companion at home and wherever life takes her.

One of our favorite things about Faye is her sweet, bubbly personality. She loves spending time with our team, playing with her friends, and soaking up plenty of attention. We love watching her personality shine just as much as we love watching her learn.

Faye is only five months old, and there is still so much for her to experience as she grows. We’re excited to continue supporting her with positive experiences, lots of reinforcement, and plenty of opportunities to practice along the way.

We are so proud of all the skills she has learned and progress she has made! Way to go, Faye!
