There’s a lot of misinformation online about removing ticks safely. Some common “home remedies” can actually increase the risk of disease transmission.

🚫 Myth: Burn the tick with a match
🚫 Myth: Cover the tick in petroleum jelly
🚫 Myth: Twist the tick out with your fingers

✔️ Instead, use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool to grasp the tick close to the skin and pull steadily upward.

After removal:
✔️ Clean the area
✔️ Wash your hands
✔️ Monitor for redness, swelling, or illness symptoms

If you’re unsure how to remove a tick safely, contact your veterinary team for guidance.

Food and skin health are more connected in dogs than most people realize. When a dog's skin just won't settle down and there's more than a seasonal pattern to it, diet is often the first place we look. Ruling out a food allergy before exploring environmental triggers can make a real difference in finding the right answer. If your dog's skin has been an ongoing concern, schedule a consultation with us. 🐾🌿

Dr. Hammer’s veterinary interests include
• Internal medicine
• Pain management

Outside of the clinic, she enjoys hiking, crafting, and taking weekend trips to the beach and the mountains. She also enjoys pushing her cats in strollers around her neighborhood.

Spring is the perfect time to reset your pet’s health routine and make sure they’re protected for the months ahead.

At Hambright Animal Hospital, we recommend a spring wellness check to catch potential health issues early and keep your pet feeling their best.

Your pet’s spring checklist should include:
✔ Annual wellness exam
✔ Updated vaccinations
✔ Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention
✔ Parasite screening
✔ Nutritional and weight evaluation

Seasonal changes can bring increased exposure to parasites, allergens, and outdoor hazards—making preventive care more important than ever.

📍 Schedule your pet’s spring wellness visit today.

Not all itching is random. Pollen, grass and mold are some of the most common seasonal triggers for pets and they tend to follow predictable patterns throughout the year. If your pet seems uncomfortable at certain times more than others, that is useful information. Bring it up at your next visit and let's take a closer look. 🌿🐾

🛑❗️ TL;DR: Rabies is still a concern in our area. If your pet's rabies vaccine isn't up to date, now is the time to check. Give us a call and we'll be happy to review their records and schedule an appointment if needed. 🛑❗️

One of our team members got quite a surprise this morning when she opened her front door to head to work and found a fox sitting on her front porch.

After safely stepping back inside, she observed the fox displaying several abnormal behaviors. This video is only a small snippet of what she witnessed.

Rabies is a very real concern in our community and surrounding areas. While not every wild animal behaving oddly has rabies, unusual behavior such as disorientation, lack of fear around people, stumbling, aggression, excessive vocalization, or appearing active during unusual hours should always be taken seriously.

If you encounter wildlife acting abnormally:

🐾 Keep your distance
🐾 Do not approach or attempt to help the animal
🐾 Keep children and pets safely indoors
🐾 Contact local Animal Control or Wildlife Services

Most importantly, make sure your pets stay up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms develop, but it is preventable through proper vaccination.

📞 Not sure if your pet is current on their rabies vaccine? Give us a call! Our team can review their records and help schedule an appointment if they're due.
