Grooming gets talked about like it's just a haircut. It isn't.

Every pet on the Groom With Me table gets looked at, not just worked on. Skin, ears, nails, joints, and how they're handling being touched that day. Most of what I find is under a coat where you'd never see it, and some of it goes straight to your vet.

The haircut is the part you notice. It's the smallest part of the job.

5 things no one tells you about being a pet groomer.

1. You're managing emotions, not just coats. Every pet walks in with a history, and so does every owner. Some days the most important skill I use has nothing to do with scissors.

2. Your body keeps score. Back, shoulders, wrists, knees. But it's not the grooming that wears you down; it's skipping the water, the food, the breaks, the stretching. Taking care of myself is part of taking care of your pet.

3. You become a detective. Matting doesn't happen overnight. Neither do ear infections, hot spots, or sore paws. Groomers are often the first to notice something is off, and that is exactly why I'll always tell you what I find.

4. It's not puppies all day. It's soaked sleeves, hair everywhere, and gently convincing a nervous senior pet that the dryer is not a portal to another dimension. Going slow is not falling behind; it's doing it right.

5. Not every pet can be groomed the same way. The dog who cannot handle a busy salon. The cat everyone else turned away. The rabbit whose coat needs hands that actually know rabbits. One pet at a time is not a tagline here — it's the only way some of them get groomed at all.

His groom takes about 90 minutes, so that's how long he's here. No crate in between. No sitting in a kennel for hours waiting his turn.

That's what one-on-one grooming means here. One pet at a time, in a crate-free space, with private rooms or the van. It's a slower way to work, and it's the only way we're willing to do it. Your pet gets a shorter day, a calmer visit, and our full attention while they're here.

Watch him in this video. He walks in on his own, he stands on his own, and he gets to take a breath when he needs one. That's cooperative care. It means working with the pet in front of us instead of pushing them through it, using whatever keeps them safe and comfortable that day. For some pets that means going slower. For some it means extra tools and extra hands. The goal is never to get it done fast; it's to get it done in a way they can handle.

3 years in our Hull salon, and wow, what a year 3 we had. 🎉🐾

On October 2, 2023, we opened our doors in Hull, and I still can't believe it's been three years. This past year was a big one, so let me brag for a sec.

I got to talk about what I love most, pet wellness and advocacy, at some amazing speaking events. In March, I attended The Pet Summit at Global Pet Expo, where I met so many incredible animal professionals and leaders who have now become real friends. I also teamed up with Sarah McLean of in the Marketing Innovation Lab, and our campaign won for Pets In the Classroom... I'm still pinching myself over that one.

On top of that, I'm serving as President of the Hull Nantasket Chamber of Commerce, which means I get to give back to the community that's shown up for us since day one. And I got to hang out and meet the founder of Matter of Trust in SF, CA!

We've groomed and cared for so many dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs that I've honestly lost count. And our mobile van is back on the road and running, which I'm SO grateful for.

I also have to shout out my awesome team of groomers. You all bring so much patience and heart to every single pet, and I couldn't do this without you.

To every pet parent, advocate, neighbor, and friend who has trusted us, cheered us on, and told a friend about us: thank you, thank you, thank you. You're the reason we're still here and still growing. 💚

A few minutes now saves your dog a lot of discomfort later.

Skipped brushing doesn't just mean a messy coat; it adds up to painful matting, skin irritation, hot spots, excess shedding all over the house, and a much more stressful visit to the groomer.

The fix isn't complicated. A few minutes of brushing a few times a week is enough to keep all of it from happening in the first place.

Meet Trish, a 5-month-old kitten who just had her first desensitization visit with us.

We walked Trish through a nail trim, ear cleaning, and a sanitary check, explaining every step along the way so she could get comfortable with the sounds, tools, and touch involved before any of it needs to happen for real.

Getting kittens into the groomer early makes a big difference. It builds trust, gets them used to being handled, and helps prevent the fear or fighting we often see later on when cats only meet a groomer as adults, after they've already decided it's something to be afraid of.
