It’s that time of year….Hotter days mean lighter meals. This is when pet raccoons need to lose the last of their “winter weight”. If your raccoon still has a fat tail, it is time to lighten their diet.

If your raccoon is over 2 years old, you might consider dropping kibble from their diet completely during spring and early summer. Healthy grains and small portions of lean protein like chicken, venison, or an egg, along with fresh vegetables and seasonal fruit will give your raccoon all the nutrition it needs.

This year has been the biggest year we have had. We have already finished 50 pounds of formula, and we still have neonatal babies in the incubator getting fat and staying warm.

PSA because of the amount of “mangy raccoon” calls we have gotten, we are sharing this information.

Spring time hair shedding, also called coat cracking is perfectly normal for all raccoons, wild or domestic. You might see a male with a bunch of mats around his tail, or you might see a female who has pulled out all that extra fur and is using it as nesting material. Her entire tail and half her body might be naked and it’s ok!

If you see a raccoon out during the day, it is also ok. Most nursing moms will be out scouting for food throughout daylight hours because it is the safest time for her to leave her babies alone while she gets some food and water.

If you see a raccoon acting “weird” outside of them being out in daylight or having a messed up coat, then it’s probably best to reach out to a wildlife rehabber. Walking in circles or showing visible signs of distress (like having seizures or foaming at the mouth) are key. A raccoon that walks right up to humans isn’t necessarily sick either, more than likely they were habituated to humans in some way.

Since we have so many “pest removal experts” out there trapping and unaliving mother raccoons they are causing hundreds if not thousands of orphaned baby raccoons to be raised by unpaid wildlife rehabbers all over the country. Those baby raccoons end up getting very used to humans and often start the cycle all over again by moving into your home or garage or shed.

STOP USING EXTERMINATORS or PEST REMOVAL COMPANIES PLEASE

They are costing wildlife rehabber time, energy and resources we don’t have. This year we are bottle feeding 30 of their orphans and that means we CANNOT afford to help the injured raccoons who are truly in need!

We had a young gentleman bring us a baby from his yard, a tiny eyes closed almost newborn baby raccoon. He tried putting it in a warm box and hoping mom would come back, but after a cold night without mom returning he knew it was time to seek help. He knew exactly where to go.

When he got here he said “I know this place, I drive for UPS, I’m here all the time!!”

So say hello to our first ever raccoon delivered by the UPS guy 🤣😜 Marshmallow for size reference

We will take good care of him. We will need a name for this sweet little boy. If you would like to send us an 8lb bucket of formula to help with him and all the other babies at the ranch, you can pick his name. We use raccoon formula available at https://foxvalleynutrition.com/

Thank you for all the love and support during these busy “baby months”. I lost count back at 20 orphaned babies, 132 loads of laundry, 3 cases of puppy pads, and countless hours of bottles and they aren’t slowing down. Please don’t trap and relocate in the spring, drive carefully at dusk and dawn, and for the love of all things holy, PLEASE don’t use “pest removal” companies. They are being paid to end the mother’s life then dump babies on rehabbers everywhere and they do NOTHING to help us! 😩😩😩🥵🥵🥵

Let the weening games begin! If this Indiana weather could just warm up already, we could be doing this outside! Instead we moved all 8 adult raccoons down to their new outdoor enclosures, and it’s a good thing they love it, because we needed their indoor enclosures to start blending babies together and get them ready for prerelease. 🥵 I’m sorry if I haven’t posted updates on all the babies brought here, it’s been an exhausting couple of months, but no worries, everyone lived and is thriving 🫶🏼
