Cat allergies can be uncomfortable and challenging. For some people—especially those with allergy-related asthma—continued exposure may be unsafe. Every family’s situation is different, and rehoming may sometimes be the most responsible choice.
If you’re considering surrendering your cat because of allergies, please consult an allergist or other qualified medical professional. They can help identify the cause of the symptoms and discuss options such as:
• Allergy medications or immunotherapy
• Keeping the cat out of bedrooms and other areas
• Using HEPA air purifiers and vacuuming regularly
• Washing hands after handling the cat
• Reducing fabrics and surfaces where allergens collect
These steps may not work for everyone, but they may help some families live safely with their pets.
If someone has severe breathing difficulty, wheezing that does not improve with prescribed medication, swelling, or fainting, seek urgent medical care. Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing or possible anaphylaxis.
If a medical professional determines that rehoming is necessary, plan ahead and contact a reputable rescue, shelter, or adoption organization. Be honest about your cat’s medical history, behavior, age, and needs; provide veterinary records; and, whenever possible, keep your cat safely at home until a suitable placement is arranged.
