Let’s correct something that keeps getting said in the rabbit world — and it needs to stop because the information will legit WRECK a home with multiple rabbits.
Pasteurella (snuffles) is t̠r̠e̠a̠t̠a̠b̠l̠e̠ ** NOT** c̠u̠r̠a̠b̠l̠e̠.
Read that again if you need to. There is a difference, I promise you.
Treatable means - You can throw antibiotics at it.
You can clear up the sneezing. You can dry up the discharge. You can make a rabbit look completely fine.
That does 𝐧𝐨𝐭 mean it’s gone.
Pasteurella buries itself deep in the sinuses, lungs, & tissue, and sits there.
Quiet in Waiting.
Then stress hits, and it resurfaces. (Even with something as simple as weather change) Meanwhile that “healthy” rabbit can still be a carrier the entire time just it was hidden due to being suppressed by the medications.
So when people say it’s “cured,” what they really mean is:
The symptoms have stopped.
Those are 𝐧𝐨𝐭 the same thing. Snuffles can not be cured and the odds are heavy on the side of the symptoms coming back at random.
And this is how rabbitries get wrecked.
Especially new rabbitries.
Because all it takes is one “treated” rabbit:
One breeding
One shared airspace
One moment of lowered immunity.
Did you know what sometimes it can even spread on a hair strand?!
…and now you’re dealing with chronic respiratory issues across your lines, infected kits, and being faced with issues on what to do next all because someone with little knowledge told you it was curable because they themselves didn't know the difference.
This isn’t about being harsh. It’s about being honest. Take it from me, I've been there. I have seen it & I'm not afraid to PM my horror stories.
Anyone and everyone needs to know the difference between the two.
Theres people out there spreading false information constantly on this very topic and it's going to cause a lot of heart break unless the new families know the difference and know the protocols that come along with the life long risks.
