Major Deer Tracking was built around one simple mission: helping hunters recover their deer when the trail gets tough.

As our audience continues to grow, it allows us to reach more hunters who may not know professional tracking services are available. Every new follower increases the chances that a hunter in need can find the help they're looking for when it matters most.

For this opening weekend, Major Deer Tracking will be tracking FREE OF CHARGE for anyone who needs help locating a deer.

Our goal is simple: if you need a deer recovered, we want you to have the opportunity to get the help you need without worrying about the cost.

As we gear up for the 2026 deer season and work our way through the new regulations, I find myself looking back on the journey that brought us here.

I started tracking deer in 2022, and honestly, we knew very little back then. Since that time, we've grown tremendously through the guidance of fellow trackers, tracking events, real-world experience, and countless hours in the field in the off season.

The things these hounds have shown me they are capable of continue to amaze me. I couldn't be more proud of the team we've become and the bond of trust we've built together. Our hounds come from Ron Slifer of Illinois, home of the "Rockstar Hounds," and their pedigree speaks for itself. In just two seasons, Zirc has helped recover 54 animals for hunters, while Raven added 7 recoveries in her first season.

Most importantly, I'm grateful to every hunter who has entrusted us to help when things didn't go as planned. Your trust during some of the most stressful moments of a hunt is something I never take for granted. Every call, every track, and every recovery is an opportunity to do what we love while helping fellow hunters achieve closure.

Our job begins when your trail goes cold.

The torch is lit, the fire is burning, and we're ready to kick off the 2026 season in just a few short weeks.

Fun morning with John Stewart over at The NEXT STEP Deer Tracking & Recovery running tracks.
John laid Raven a 816 yard track that had a little bit of everything. Thermals, wind, dry ground that was rained on heavy after the line was laid, multiple terrain changes. Overall Raven did well. Then John ran patsy on the same line to get her use to running after other dogs. This is a key element to train the dogs for, we often times can use a more experienced hound for back up if we need extra verification. No time in the woods behind a dog is ever wasted. Always fun. Thanks again John.

New plate finally came in. 🤣

Raven again at 24+ hours.

At first glance, the map looks like an absolute mess, but once you factor in the elevation changes, wind, and thermals, it all starts to make sense.

The entire track was through 3-4 foot tall grass. While that vegetation can hold scent deep, it also makes it difficult to line out cleanly. Between thermal draws and shifting winds, scent was scattered throughout the area, forcing Raven to work hard to locate the end of the scent cone and then work her way back to the hoof before confidently lining out again.

We even jumped a doe at one point, adding another challenge to an already difficult track.

The GPS may look like a jumbled mess, but from behind the hound, it was something special to watch. Raven put her head down, trusted her nose, and absolutely grinded it out. More importantly, she had fun doing it and gained valuable experience with every step.

These are the kinds of tracks that build a great dog—not the easy ones, but the ones that make them think, adapt, and keep pushing until they figure it out.

Proud of this girl and excited to see where her journey takes her.

This is a 26-hour-old track Raven and I ran a few days ago, and we had a lot of fun with this one.

Strong storms were moving in, we had rain overnight, and temperatures in the 90s made for some very challenging scenting conditions. The first third of the track looks like a mess—and truthfully, it was—but the way Raven worked it out was beautiful to watch.

Because of the thermals and wind direction, she had to deal with strong hide odor for the entire first third of the track. It wasn't until we reached the north end and started dropping in elevation that she was finally working primarily hoof odor. Watching her dig deep for that foot scent and sort through all of the hide odor was incredibly impressive.

Once she got out of the hide odor, she cleaned things up and moved the line much faster. Then, at the very end, she caught wind of the hide again, threw her nose up, and went straight to the prize.

It takes a tremendous amount of mental fortitude for a dog to stay committed to an older scent line when they can smell the end for much of the track. Raven is smart enough to know that the hide odor means the finish is close, but she's also smart enough to understand that I want her to follow the foot odor and stay true to the track.

Every day out, she continues to make incredible progress and gives me another glimpse of what she's going to become. I'm excited to see where her journey takes us.
