We wanted to address the several confirmed outbreaks of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), including neurologic equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM) cases, in horses that participated in major equine events in Texas earlier this month. Horses that attended these events have since traveled across the country, unfortunately leading to a rapid spread of the virus in multiple states so far. Let’s review common signs and prevention methods.

Early recognition is key and makes a huge difference in preventing further spread. Signs to monitor your horse for include fever, nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy, inappetence, or development of neurologic disease (hind end weakness, stumbling, incoordination, difficulty rising, urine dribbling). If you notice any of these signs, isolate your horse from others and contact your veterinarian.

Prevention will make a huge difference in protecting your horses. While the EHV vaccine (Flu/Rhino) does not prevent all infections or eliminate the risk of the neurologic disease, it does help reduce the spread and severity of the respiratory illness. Because of this, we recommend boostering the vaccine if your horse has not received it in the last 6 months. Practicing good biosecurity measures and avoiding any unnecessary travel to other farms or events, as well as avoiding contact with unknown horses is also recommended. Stay safe everyone!🐴❤️
