Homesteading isn’t always slow, peaceful, and perfectly timed… sometimes it’s straight up CHAOS!

I spent all week bringing my sourdough starter back to life after months in the fridge. She was finally strong, bubbly, and ready. Today was the day—because tonight I have to mix my dough so it can cold proof overnight and be ready to bake fresh for our family dinner tomorrow.

There’s no “I’ll just do it tomorrow” with sourdough. Timing matters.

So when I realized I forgot to feed her this morning?
Yeah… I dropped everything and drove home on my lunch break to feed my starter like my dinner plans depended on it—because they do 😅

Now she’ll (hopefully) peak right when I get home so I can mix my dough tonight, tuck it into the fridge, and have that fresh baked bread on the table tomorrow.

This is real homesteading.
Not always convenient. Not always aesthetic.
But always worth it.

New girls, fresh eggs, and a little surprise 🥚💚

We added 3 white layers and 6 brown layers to the flock… and today I found a GREEN egg!! I was not expecting that and I’m way too excited about it 😂

This is your reminder that homesteading doesn’t have to be perfect or picture-perfect to be beautiful. Sometimes it’s just collecting eggs in your backyard and getting surprised by a little pop of color.

Follow along as we grow, learn, and figure it out as we go 🤍

🥖 Sourdough Sunday 🥖

Pulled my starter out of the fridge today and she was definitely sleepy 😅 Had a layer of h***h on top (anyone else call it that?!) but I just mixed it back in since it’s been a while since I’ve used her.

Today’s goal: getting back into a good rhythm with sourdough 🙌 I gave her a good feeding with equal parts flour and water, and I’m planning to keep feeding her consistently this week to get her nice and active again for some bread baking next weekend 🤞

I really want to stick with it this time because there’s just something so satisfying about homemade sourdough 💛

👉 If you’re a sourdough pro (or even just a little more consistent than me 😅), I’d LOVE your input:
• What’s your feeding routine?
• Favorite active starter recipes?
• What do you do with your discard?

And if you’ve been thinking about starting sourdough but haven’t yet—what’s holding you back? I’m right there with you trying to get into the groove!

Let’s share all the tips, recipes, and motivation 👇

Hi everyone! 👋 Welcome to Blended Family Homestead.

My husband and I have been dreaming about starting a homestead since we began dating 6 years ago. Together, we have 5 kids — three are mine, two are his — and we’re learning how to merge family, work, and this dream all at once.

We’ve owned our house on a ½ acre in Central Pennsylvania for a while now, but getting started hasn’t been easy. Last year we tried keeping chickens, but a mink got to them and we had to start over. On top of that, we couldn’t move in right away because of major water well issues. While we were waiting, we dove into major home renovations to make the house livable for our family.

Now, we have baby chicks, and we’re preparing to dive into homesteading this summer — not just chickens, but also goats, rabbits, and a garden full of fresh vegetables.

One thing we want to show with our page is that you don’t have to be experienced, perfectly equipped, or have it all figured out to start homesteading. You can start right now, with what you have, wherever you are. It’s messy, it’s learning as you go, it’s trial and error — and that’s exactly the journey we want to share.

We’ll be posting the beginner mistakes, the small wins, the heartbreaks, and all the real, messy joy that comes with starting from scratch — renovations, animals, gardening, and life with five kids. We hope it inspires other everyday families to try their own homesteading dreams.

✨ Follow along for updates on our family, our home renovations, our homestead, and our journey to living a simpler, more intentional life. We’re just getting started — and we’d love to have you join us!
