We moved out to Woodbine in 2016 and started making our hobby farm dreams come true. Farming gives us plenty of reasons to spend time outside and allows us to better understand where our food comes from. We currently raise Silver Fox rabbits for 4H and for meat along with a variety of poultry for eggs and meat. We often have rabbit kits for sale and from time to time we will also be selling poultry.

Last night, I noticed that one of the kits was sitting in the corner of the cage outside of the nest box. In my experience, that's a sign that it's urgently time to move the nest out of the box into the corner of the cage so that no one gets left outside alone at night.

It's not terribly cold outside yet and the bunnies have a good amount of fur at this age. But their feet get damp from exploring the cage, and they need the body heat of their siblings to stay warm.

Rabbit kits begin to open their eyes around 12 to 14 days old. We have two litters that are growing out right now and I took the boxes out of both cages at the same time. Both litters had a few babies with their eyes open and a few that weren't open yet.

I was glad when I looked in on them this morning to see everyone huddled together in their corner.

I'm so grateful that we've been able to raise our kids here on the farm. They could tell the carrots were almost ready and just helped themselves. Sampling for sweetness. 👏😁

Can we grow & preserve enough fodder to feed our livestock over the winter?

Small scale silage making will be part of the solution. So far we've just made this pea silage. Tomorrow we'll see whether my chipper shredder can help me chop up some corn silage.

Slow and steady progress towards our self sufficiency goals 💪.

We have 5 acres of land, partially wooded. We're practicing and preparing to wean ourselves off of store bought livestock feed.
