It's pet obesity awareness day. So lets talk about it. I don't go much by weight but rather body condition scoring. The quick and easy way to determine it is feel the ribs. If you can feel the ribs and feel a little fat on them, then they are perfect. No fat over the ribs means to skinny, and fat but ribs you can't feel means to fat.

Let's talk about heartworms. I know you are thinking, "It's almost winter, mosquitos are long gone, what do I have to worry about." Most of that is true, but remember it only takes 1 mosquito to spread the disease and I've seen those buggers in the middle of February in Michigan. Are they less at risk in the winter? Yes. Are they at no risk? No. Be safe and continue prevention through the winter months. Don't let your pup be the positive we find next year.

Let's talk about lab work. We recommend running routine blood work on all our our senior pets (>7 years). We do this to catch issues early when they are easier to treat successfully. It also can give us a baseline to compare to in the future if your pet gets sick.

October is Pet Wellness month. We know thins are expensive everywhere now but don't let your pet's health suffer because of it. Yearly check ups help us catch things early and the earlier things are caught the better they respond to treatment. We'll work with you to stay in your budget.
