Wednesday Trainer Nights are coming back. 🐕‍🦺

Starting October 7th at 7 PM, we’re opening up The Dog Standard again for trainers, handlers, kennel staff, daycare teams, business owners, dog nerds, and anyone else who wants to spend an evening learning, teaching, working dogs, solving problems, or just hanging out with good people.

Trainer Night has never really been about one training philosophy, one sport, or one level of experience.

It’s about getting people together.

Some nights we may be working obedience or behavioral cases. Other nights it could be tracking, detection, husbandry, Search & Rescue, IGP, French Ring, PSA, agility, puppy development, or something completely different.

And sometimes the most useful conversation has nothing to do with the dog in front of us.

Running a training, boarding, or daycare business creates some weird problems. Difficult client situations. Operational problems. Staff issues. Training cases that don’t fit neatly into a textbook. Trainer Night gives us a place to sit around with other people in the industry and ask:

“Alright… how would you handle this?”

If you’re good at something, come teach us.

If you’re struggling with something, bring it.

If you want more hands-on experience, bring a dog or work one of ours.

And if you don’t want to do any of that, come hang out, meet people, and make some friends.

There’s no charge. We want this to remain a place for learning, experimentation, science, conversation, and building a stronger dog community around Houston.

And there’s one more reason October 7th is a good night to bring everybody back together:

🎂 It’s Elliot’s birthday.

So come train some dogs, argue about dog training, teach us something, learn something, make some friends, and help us celebrate Elliot.

We love when a behavioral “makes parole” as Hunters mom put it and gets to spend a night at home practicing their new rules and boundaries.

Hunter came to us and had a whole lot of attitude when it came to handling and pressure(picture #1). He had ping pong sized mats behind both ears, he couldn’t update his vaccines without heavy medication, he snapped at his family when they would take off his vest or any harness type gear, and he had bitten 3 people outside of the family.

What we found was a higher drive golden who was begging for structure. He has been a fun challenge. Let me tell you though, his mom is exactly who he needs. She is soaking in every lesson. Typically board and trains go home on the weekend, but last Saturday Hunter proved to us all he was not ready for that. He could not give his mom the respect she needed. So instead of pushing him home, he stay led with us through the weekend and mom asked when she could try again. I said Monday same time. She said absolutely! 11 am on Monday Hunter tried again. This time he could not give ME the respect and focus I needed to even walk him from his room to his mom. So we spent two hours giving him the chance to show us what he had already demonstrated that he knew WITHOUT mom. He could not. So we reconvened and tried again on Tuesday. Finally, he was able to see that we were not budging. If Hunter did not give up what he wanted and give up his old habits he was not going to go home.

This is the big reason we start sending our training dogs home the first weekend. We need to see what problems the family will face without us.

Luckily Hunters mom was going to come for a lesson everyday until we were able to send him home for just one night. This is why I see success in his future.

Hunter spent a night at home. Mom spent a night implementing new rules and then brought him back to school this morning. Now we continue the week as normal and we will see mom on Friday for another shot.

What we do here is education and rehab. We are not interested in making anyone do anything. Corrections are necessary, but we have done the work to understand that what an anxious dog like Hunter needs is not more correction or more rewards. He needs time. Time to learn how to regulate himself. Time to understand that not everything has to happen instantly. If he’s wrong sure we can correct him. But if he’s panicking because he can’t get what he wants what correction could he possibly understand.

This is such a hard concept for trainers. Everyone wants to believe they know what your dog should look like at the end. That everyday the dog should have nothing but complete success. Thats unrealistic and a lie. Your dog, when going through a rehab is facing very real issues for them. Issues most dogs have been growing into for years. I, nor anyone else on this planet can “fix” that in an instant—or really even in a program. Why? There’s nothing to fix. No one is broken. There is a lack of understanding.

What we can do in 6 weeks is give you all the lessons you need to be educated on the dog at the end of your leash. We can lay a solid foundation of understanding for both you and the dog. We can put in 90% of the reps needed to start the transition, and we can walk with you and your dog though any problem. Ultimately after that it is up to you as the owner to decide what you want your relationship and your dogs life to look like. We can give you all the information on how to get there, what’s realistic, and all the pros and cons of the ways we can get there.

If you have read this long we appreciate it.

A different kind of day for The Dog Standard. ⚖️

Our team had the opportunity to see our work extend beyond the training field and into the courtroom.

We were retained by legal counsel to conduct an independent behavioral evaluation of a dog involved in an ongoing legal matter. That meant putting our opinions to the test with a comprehensive hands-on assessment, extensive video documentation, behavioral analysis, and a written professional report examining not just what behaviors we observed, but why they were occurring.

We can’t discuss the details of the case, but we’re incredibly proud of the role our evaluation played and the outcome reached.

Cases like this are also an important reminder that fear, reactivity, and aggression are not interchangeable terms. Understanding the behavior in front of you requires looking beyond the moment itself and evaluating the whole dog.

We’re dog trainers first, but experiences like this remind us just how far that knowledge can reach.

Train the dog. Understand the behavior. Advocate with evidence.

Over the last six years, one of the biggest things I’ve learned is that understanding behavior never really stops.

The more dogs I work with, the more I find myself paying attention to the little things and asking, “Why did that happen?”

So I decided to start documenting some of those moments.

Today’s one was simple.

I wanted to take the next step with Spark and Clue, so I left them in a stay, drove down the road to the gas station, and left my phone behind to record what happened.

It’s a small moment, but I think training is built on small moments like these.

Hope you enjoy it.
