This is what I do - in between managing 16 other dogs, many of which were dumped, that are in my care. It's hard if you don't work in rescue to understand that people dump dogs. I don't know if they think, "oh, its a dog, it can hunt for food," or "I don't want to deal with this dog, someone else will take it..." and so on. Visualize someone driving to a neighborhood, opening their door, pushing their dog out and driving away. It makes my blood boil.
NO. They are rarely able to hunt for enough food to sustain themselves - they are domesticated and many just can't or don't hunt. Think about those emaciated dogs you see in your feed :(
NO. When a dog (like the one in the video) is dumped like trash, they don't just jump in someone else's car and become their instant pet. Rescuer's give their time, their money, their heart & patience to catch scared dogs, but where should they all go? Animal Control is extremely difficult on a dog like Blue. He is unable to be touched so deemed "rescue only" and unless there is a rescue that can manage a behavioral case, he would likely be euthanized for space or never make it beyond the door. I hear this all the time, "can't you just take him?" - I HAVE! Over and over and it doesn't even make a dent. We take the hard to place, fearful, medical cases that stand very little chance at getting adopted. We know that and know that our life will be turned upside down until they start to heal - physically and emotionally and become part of our routine.
If you get a dog, it is YOUR responsibility to be that dog's caretaker. Texas, we have a problem and rescuers are overwhelmed. Shelters are overwhelmed. Anyone that takes in dogs is overwhelmed. We need to do better!
We, as a family and a rescue/sanctuary, are taking tiny steps in the direction of being able to help more, but in creating a sanctuary, there is just no end to requests for help. There are so many dumped dogs that show up on my neighborhood feed every day, I cannot even open it. We are wall to wall dogs - with very demanding needs, primarily seniors. Trying to raise funds to cover just the dogs in our care AND work toward building a sanctuary on land we purchased for that purpose seems a task so far away when I want to help right now. Sorry, just a rant. I am tired and overwhelmed, sad & frustrated - I am doing the social media, dog care (with my husband & daughter), help with rescues like Blue, managing all of the food, supplements, meds & toys supplies, all rescue expenses, fundraising while planning a big event in August. How can wanting to help dogs that need it, be this hard?
The dog in this video was in my neighborhood for well over a month. We caught him mid April (in the trap) and he escaped from my yard - the emotional turmoil from that was gut wrenching. FINALLY - he trusted a neighbor enough to go into his barn (yesterday, May 23) and the door closed! That was exactly what we needed to get him leashed and crated and off to the vet. He has a long journey of learning to trust ahead of him - if you are interested in helping with his medical costs, fostering or adopting, please reach out directly [email protected]. His costs so far are $650 sedation, meds, Xrays (broken metacarpals), vaccines, blood work (he's HW+). More costs are coming - neuter, HW treatment, continuing meds. If you can help, it's greatly appreciated! Just note its for Blue in comment area, or select "Blue's Medical" from PayPal's dropdown menu. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! If other rescue's help with his care & I raise more than the $650, the funds will be directed to them. That is just what we have spent so far.
