If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws.

Asphalt can reach 150°F when the air is only 85°F. That's hot enough to cause burns in seconds.

Quick Test: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If you can't keep it there, neither can your dog.

Walk early, walk late, or walk on grass!

Once again the Team at Garden Oaks working with a client who cares finds a home for a basket of puppies! We never get tired of telling you how much our clients do for so many helpless animals in the city of Houston. We truly have the best clients in the world.

Yesterday a client contacted us about an elderly neighbor who had someone leave a basket of 7 puppies on her front porch. The neighbor has two dogs so probably someone thought they would do the right thing.

They called the clinic early yesterday morning and our Lead CSR, Katie got in touch with me and I reached out to one of my favorite people Jarrad Mears Executive Director of BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions. Jarrad has been a true change and someone who is constantly trying to save the next one in spite of not having a lot of resources.

Jarrad had a local rescue come to the aid of the puppies and all will be safe and sound.

Thanks to our clients, our team at Garden Oaks, Jarrad and the whole team at BARC, and Rescued Pets Movement, 7 puppies now have a chance at a great life.

The communities in and around Garden Oaks are the best ones in the city!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GARDEN OAKS VETERINARY CENTER!!!

10 years ago today, Dr. Stephen K. Chmaitelli opened Garden Oaks Veterinary Clinic. So much has changed but those of us who knew him, still feel his presence around the clinic. We lost him on 8/15/2021 and many of us are in the world of veterinary medicine because of him.
We still speak with those who have moved on to other clinics or life ventures and we know we were touched by him. The new name, Garden Oaks Veterinary Center is one we had planned together and I wish we could just one time see him standing in the new surgical suite.
Yesterday, the owners of Koda, the dog we defended from city court to county court and forced the city to release and rescind their euthanasia order, called me about Koda. Such interesting timing.
I am attaching a video and a couple of photos from that time, because we fought so hard and refused to surrender. It took multiple hearings with the city, a trial at the county level that the judge stopped, because she wanted to go be sure she understood all the animal law issues, and a final trial where attorney Jessica Milligan destroyed the city. The trial was on Zoom and when the judge rendered her verdict, she loudly said, FREE KODA! and slammed the gavel down.
There was a ton of joyful tears at Garden Oaks that day. I have put in a few pics and a video of Stephen with Koda (the dangerous dog;) A couple are from a day when Stephen took the whole team out for paintball and axe throwing. The others are the family of Koda and a few who were deeply involved in his care and the fight against the City of Houston. This is the day they took Koda home after nearly two months. Koda's care at Garden Oaks was without charge.

Happy Birthday Garden Oaks, and Stephen, damn, we miss you.

We talk often about how wonderful the people in Garden Oaks, Oak Forest, the Heights and other surrounding communities are about rescuing those without a voice. At Garden Oaks Veterinary Clinic we partner to help BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions and are always amazed at what their team is able to accomplish in spite of a very, very difficult job. A friend of ours worked there years ago,Alejandra Peimbert, witnessed a video of a man dragging three dogs into a shelter. It broke her down so sadly that she wrote this poem as a dog being abandoned at a shelter would. Thank you to all who try every day to do even the smallest thing, for those without voices.

“Wait I don’t understand.

Why are you walking away from me?

Why am I not going with you?

I want to follow you.

I cant…

You are not looking back.

Come back!

Come back!

I’m shaking and confused.

I thought you loved me…

You laughed when we were together.

You told me everything.

We cuddled on rainy days,

and now you are walking away?

What did I do wrong?

I really don’t know.

Please don’t leave.

Don’t leave…

There is too much noise,

and I feel lost.

I felt free by your side.

I thought you did too…

I thought you felt happy when

you came home.

I thought you knew that

I loved the sound of your voice.

I thought you knew that I loved you.

Hope you come back.

Hope you realize how empty

life is without me.

I hope…you loved me.

I can’t see you now.

They say I will be fine,

And will find love again.

I hope they are right.

For I will always remember your touch,

your smell, your smile.

My best friend…

Come back…

But you don’t…

My life feels like it is over.

But deep down, I know my ability to love unconditionally

Will eventually lead to my freedom.

Wish I could say the same for you…”
