HAPPY BIRTHDAY GARDEN OAKS VETERINARY CENTER!!!
10 years ago today, Dr. Stephen K. Chmaitelli opened Garden Oaks Veterinary Clinic. So much has changed but those of us who knew him, still feel his presence around the clinic. We lost him on 8/15/2021 and many of us are in the world of veterinary medicine because of him.
We still speak with those who have moved on to other clinics or life ventures and we know we were touched by him. The new name, Garden Oaks Veterinary Center is one we had planned together and I wish we could just one time see him standing in the new surgical suite.
Yesterday, the owners of Koda, the dog we defended from city court to county court and forced the city to release and rescind their euthanasia order, called me about Koda. Such interesting timing.
I am attaching a video and a couple of photos from that time, because we fought so hard and refused to surrender. It took multiple hearings with the city, a trial at the county level that the judge stopped, because she wanted to go be sure she understood all the animal law issues, and a final trial where attorney Jessica Milligan destroyed the city. The trial was on Zoom and when the judge rendered her verdict, she loudly said, FREE KODA! and slammed the gavel down.
There was a ton of joyful tears at Garden Oaks that day. I have put in a few pics and a video of Stephen with Koda (the dangerous dog;) A couple are from a day when Stephen took the whole team out for paintball and axe throwing. The others are the family of Koda and a few who were deeply involved in his care and the fight against the City of Houston. This is the day they took Koda home after nearly two months. Koda's care at Garden Oaks was without charge.
Happy Birthday Garden Oaks, and Stephen, damn, we miss you.
