Yesterday was a tough mental day with many unexpected turns. But at one point, I looked to my son and I thought of the question, “What’s my why?” The answer, my family. Sometimes you have to stop, breathe, and remind yourself.

🟡 Jaundice - yellow skin and/or mucous membranes due to the buildup of bilirubin. This can happen from the destruction of red blood cells, obstruction of the bile duct, or damage to the liver and/or gallbladder. Anything from parasites to toxins to infectious disease to cancer can cause jaundice.

Besides the physical exam, blood work and radiographs are recommended to determine which pathway is causing the jaundice. From there, veterinarians can start to formulate an appropriate treatment plan.

Happy World Veterinary Day! 🩺 In honor of this pawesome day, I'm joining to share my 5 (of the many) reasons why I love being a veterinarian:

1. Helping sick animals get better, happy animals be happier, and in turn, helping the human family members as well.

2. Interacting with animals every day. And depending on the day there can be many different species as well!

3. Having interesting cases that require you to be a detective and problem solver. Being a veterinarian truly requires a good foundation in all S.T.E.A.M. fields: science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

4. Helping older pets enjoy their senior years as best they can. It is very rewarding to see older pets respond to treatment and get renewed energy and comfort.

5. Help inspire the next generation of scientists. I am very grateful to be able to use my platform to promote S.T.E.A.M., animals, and encourage students young and old to enter veterinary medicine or related fields.
