I have had so many questions on genetics and my plans for my program. I think I need to answer them all here.
First is why weren’t any of the puppies parti?
Archer does not carry the parti gene. He is SS meaning he Carrie’s only solid coat. Birdie carries SPSP meaning she carrying 2 copies of parti. She also is a parti poodle which is how her coat is two colors. Now even though this litter came out solids and abstracts they should all carry a gene of parti. That means they will be Ssp for solid and parti genes.
Next is how did they produce darker reds?
Birdie is Ee and that lower case e means she carries red. e gene is for shades of cream-apricot-red. Her intensity on embark is 7/10 for red. Archer is 10/10 red intensity. That’s how these puppies came out darker red.
Next is how did they produce so many reds when the pair predictor on embark showed their would be black and brown and cream to red?
Genetics can be crazy. I was expecting everything from the pair predictor and several experts on genetics agreed with Embark’s pair predictor. But the thing is genetics can pull a fast one! This is one of those cases. They went with the high intensity e gene. So many of my breeder friends and myself literally couldn’t believe it.
On another note a few breeders disagreed with me for breeding red to brown as many didn’t like the idea of it making the red fade or producing reds with brown/ liver noses. I did it because both parents carried a high intensity and Archer carried a Brown gene. Even though his nose is black he carries Bb meaning he Carrie’s black and brown. That’s also how they produced our beautiful dark brown baby boy who is staying in our program.
The next biggest question and I mean most asked, is will Archer and Birdie be bred again for another litter to see what they will have?
This question is still in the air. I am leaning towards breeding them again however if I find another CHIC certified stud available for Stud service I may go forward with that breeding so keep some females back for my program. It’s been hard to find health tested, registered, and chic certified studs in my area. Especially ones with the genetics I’m looking for. Most likely Archer will be bred to Birdie again for another litter❤️
I hope this answers most questions, if anyone has anymore questions feel free to text me, comment on here, or reach out to me on Good Dog! I would love to chat! I can talk poodle 🐩 all day long😍❤️
