While letting our feline friends free-feed seems easier than scheduled feeding, it can become a pain down the road if they develop diabetes.
Also, diabetes doesn't just mean your cat is fat - let's talk about the real symptoms.

1. Increased Thirst & Urination: often times these are the first signs, larger litterbox volumes or accidents outside the box may occur

2. Appetite Changes: while many diabetic cats will first show increased appetite, it may later decrease as the disease progresses

3. Weight Loss: despite eating normally or excessively, they will often lose weight

4. Lethargy & Weakness: reduced activity, low energy, or difficulty jumping

5. Coat & Body Changes: poor coat quality or an enlarged liver may be noted

6. Increased UTIs have been seen in cases as well

Do you know when your pet is stressed?
Some are similar among all species but it's good to know species specific tells as well!

Dogs 🐶 : panting, tail tucking, yawning, pinned-back ears, excessive licking

Cats 😺 : flattened ears, dilated pupils, puffed-up fur, tail flicking, hiding

Birds 🐦 : feather plucking, holding feathers tightly, repetitive head movements

Reptiles 🦎 : lack of appetite, frequent hiding, sudden color changes, glass surfing

Horses 🐴 : tense muscles, rapid breathing, tail swishing, repetitive pawing

Livestock 🐄 : reduced feed intake, altered social interactions, tail flicking, frequent weight shifting
