Come and visit us!

🐶 ADOPTABLE DOGS: Many of our dogs live in foster homes and NOT at the shelter, so all dogs can be met on an appointment basis. The first step is to complete an online adoption application (friends4life.org/adopt).

🐱 ADOPTABLE CATS: The shelter has three free-roaming cat rooms where you can come and meet adoptable cats. Some cats do live in foster homes, so we’re happy to let

you know if the cat you’re interested in is at the shelter or in foster before you come by. We also have adoptable cats at our PetSmart Cattery at S Shepherd/Alabama (2902 S Shepherd Dr, Houston, TX 77098).

By popular demand... a Bernie update! 💜

Last week, Bernie was making great progress, but a necessary vet visit set him back a bit.

Being handled by strangers was understandably stressful for this shy little guy, and he spent a couple of days retreating to the safety of his crate.

The good news? Bernie is bouncing back.

Today, he stayed in his dog bed when his foster entered the room, calmly accepted breakfast, and even ventured out to explore the hallway on his own. He also met his foster’s dog through a baby gate, and after a brief hello, everyone politely went their separate ways. 😊

We also have a medical update: Bernie’s skin condition is not contagious. It turns out he has a yeast infection, and he’s now receiving treatment.

Recovery isn’t always a straight line, but Bernie keeps showing us that he’s willing to try. One small brave step at a time.

From strays to supermodels!

Rumble and Tumble are three months old and thriving thanks to a wonderful foster home.

These camera-ready siblings can’t wait to meet their forever families.

Please help us spread the word. 💜 Let’s find them loving homes!

**Update: stranger #6 accomplished! (Pic in the comments)**

Shep, a handsome youngster, was found wandering the streets with his buddy Pete.

A good Samaritan took them both in. Pete, a social butterfly, quickly found a loving family. Shep, on the other hand, takes a little more time warming up to people.

It would be hard for him to meet adopters if he shies away from them, so he has some homework to do!

Our behavior team is pairing Shep with friendly “strangers” so he can have a series of positive interactions with people.

The goal is for Shep to meet and be comfortable around eight strangers before he gets the green light to start meeting adopters.

He’s 5 strangers down, 3 more to go! 😊

Kudos to Shep’s rescuers for loving him and assisting with all these sessions.

Please wish this sweet boy continued success. He’s a truly gentle soul and will make someone an incredibly loyal companion.

P.S. Shy dogs may be a little harder to introduce to adopters, but they are easy to love. If you’ve ever loved a shy animal, tell us about them!

Every time Charles goes on a field trip, we wonder if he’s picturing the life he hopes is waiting for him.

Maybe he imagines waking up to the sound of his person grabbing their keys and saying, “Ready, Charles?” His tail starts wagging before the door even opens because he knows the day is about to begin.

He sees himself walking along trails with the morning sun on his face, sniffing every interesting patch of grass like it’s a brand-new chapter. Maybe there’s a quiet stop by the water, where his person fishes and Charles supervises from the shore, happily accepting snacks as payment for his excellent company.

Then it’s back to the trail, back to the breeze, back to the kind of adventure that feels even better because he has someone to share it with.

And when the day winds down, Charles imagines going home together. Dinner in the kitchen. A cozy spot on the floor. His person settling in for the night while Charles curls up nearby, tired from the day and happy just to be included.

A hike, a snack, a nap, a show on TV, and a human who looks at him like he’s already home.

That’s the life Charles is hoping for.

Sandy and Escape would like to invite you to the PetSmart cattery(2902 S Shepherd Dr) for their live-action adaptation of The Lion Queen.

Today’s rehearsal is the iconic cliff scene, and let’s just say the commitment to the bit is strong. Very strong. Possibly Oscar-worthy.

Come see the show in person and meet these two adoptable stars. The only ending we’re accepting is the one where they go home.

Remember Captain Kirk? (See the original video in the comments.)

This boy was so terrified of people that he had to be trapped after he was seen dragging his leg.

He has been with us while we work through both his physical injuries and his fear of humans.

The hard part is this: medical care causes behavior setbacks. Exams and medications are stressful, and trust is hard to build.

But when pain and infection are involved, treatment has to come first.

Among other things, our vet discovered a bone infection, which has been causing Captain Kirk significant discomfort and pain.

So our boy has been on antibiotics, along with pain medication and anti-anxiety support.

His veterinary recheck is coming up soon so the team can see how he’s healing and decide on the next steps. We’ll share the findings shortly.

Until his physical health improves, we’ve been taking behavior work slowly. An animal who is hurting is not in the right headspace to learn or build confidence.

In the meantime, we’re focusing on helping him feel a little safer and keeping his spirits up with environmental enrichment.

One thing he especially enjoys? Food puzzles. 💜

And we’re starting to see little signs of progress.

He is now offering soft looks to his caregivers when treats are involved and spending more time at the front of his kennel instead of staying withdrawn in the back.

In this short video: Kim working with Kirk, tossing treats. Per the behavior team notes:

“It may seem mean to have a fearful dog like Kirk work for treats by looking towards us. But this exercise can develop a sense of agency when he learns that he can control the actions of humans with his own behavior.

We often don’t realize that the most fearful of animals can find the act of treat tossing scary! If they can control when we give them treats, scared dogs like Kirk can feel more comfortable with these movements.”

We cherish those baby steps!

Please keep rooting for Captain Kirk. Healing, both physical and emotional, takes time.

A vet update to follow soon.

George is looking for a summer staycation spot 💛

This sweet senior lady needs a temporary foster home from June 24 through August 18, and we would love to find her a cozy place to land.

George has truly blossomed in her foster home. She has discovered the joy of soft beds, quiet companionship, and most importantly, that she is very much a lap cat. She may be a senior, but she still has so much love to give.

Thinking about fostering a senior cat? Curious about George but not quite ready to send in an adoption app? This could be the perfect little trial run.

Even if you can only foster her for part of that time, it would be a huge help.

Text (713) 714-2215 if you can give George a soft place to spend part of her summer.
