🇺🇸 9/11 Today, we remember. 🇺🇸
On September 11, 2001, our nation experienced unimaginable loss.

Today, we honor the men and women whose lives were taken, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the courage, sacrifice, and unity that followed.

At Camp Barkansas, we also want to remember some very special four-legged heroes. 🐾

More than 300 working dogs joined the response at Ground Zero—searching the rubble for survivors and victims, working alongside first responders, and providing comfort during an incredibly difficult time.

Among them was Apollo, an NYPD German Shepherd and the first police K-9 to respond at Ground Zero. Despite being burned by embers and injuring his paws on the debris, Apollo continued searching. (American Kennel Club)

Bretagne, a 2-year-old Golden Retriever, worked with Texas Task Force 1 for 10 days. She became the last known surviving 9/11 search-and-rescue dog before passing away at age 16 in June 2016. (American Kennel Club)

And Sirius, a 4-year-old Labrador Retriever and Port Authority Police K-9, tragically lost his life in the attacks. He is believed to have been the only police dog killed at the World Trade Center that day.

Today, we remember the lives lost, the heroes who answered the call—and the paws that worked beside them. 🇺🇸🐾

We will never forget.
