"The critical question is: is the animal leading a life worth living? That should be the minimum we offer." Dr. Daniel Mills

During our animal welfare panel, Michael Shikashio asked what happens when a dog's choices clash with what we think is best for them. (Rolling in duck p**p came up. Of course it did.) Dr. Daniel Mills, Professor of Veterinary Behavioural Medicine, brought it back to the big picture: not every moment has to be perfect, but every dog deserves a life worth living.

He followed it with a simple question we can all ask before choosing an approach: is it necessary? If there is a kinder way to reach the same goal, that is the way to go.

Huge thanks to Daniel and our incredible panel, Kim Brophey, Dr. Emma Gaalaas Mullaney, Dr. Lisa Gunter, Dr. Abbie Atteberry, and Dr. Patricia McConnell, moderated by Michael Shikashio.

YAY Me!
I am officially a Certified Nose Work Instructor (CNWI) through the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW)! 🐾

I am SO excited to officially add CNWI to my credentials.
Nose work has become one of my favorite things to teach because it gives dogs the opportunity to do something they are already incredibly good at: use their noses!

I love watching dogs discover that they can solve problems independently, watching their confidence grow, and, I’m sure my favorite part, watching their humans learn to really see what their dogs are telling them.

A thank you to NACSW for creating such an incredible program and for all of the education, and opportunities along the way. I am so happy to officially be part of this community of instructors. ❤️

A special thank you to who helped set me on this path in the first place, and to , who went through this process with me! It was wonderful to have the moral support an accountability buddy, we made it!

So...what’s next?
More sniffing of course!!!!

I’m working on my upcoming nose work class schedule now, including new opportunities to learn the foundations of K9 scent work, build your dog’s search skills, and dive deeper into odor. Stay tuned for class dates!

Canine separation anxiety is rarely a straight line from “panic” to “calm.” In practice, it involves plateaus, regressions, and moments where the protocol just doesn’t seem to work.
