Living with a reactive dog can shrink your world in ways you never expected. Let's talk about the grief, guilt, burnout, lost freedom—and why sometimes the answer isn't more training, but building a life that actually works for both of you.

An amazingly gorgeous day, I opted to play hooky from work. I’m not really sure how that works, given that I run my own business. I simply didn’t think about it too much and I grabbed my new paddleboard and my OG ride or die and headed out to the local lake. I have to do everything that Crystal Silmi does, and I took Tallulah for the inaugural paddle. It was the first time for either of us on a paddleboard, and she was the only one standing up. I think for our first time we did well. Not sure how many more opportunities we will have before the cold weather set in up here in the PNW, but I do look forward to doing this again!

Vagar El Santo de la Noche turns 1 today! I was really worried about bringing a puppy into my home and this little man has really shaken up the Adams household (in the best of ways). He is my baby beefcake, my agro adolescent, I am #2 in his world (after his sister Xochi), and his very best snuggle buddy. This little man has commandeered my time, my heart and my happiness. I am so glad that this little soul came to join my crew. Please help me and wishing baby Santo a very happy first birthday!

🐾 Does your dog have a superpower you’re not fully using yet? 🐾

Your dog’s nose is an incredible tool. Did you know dogs have up to 300 million scent spots in their noses, while humans have only about 5 million. Scent is how dogs gather information, explore the world, and make sense of their environment.

That’s why I love Nose Work! 🐶✨

Nose Work gives dogs the opportunity to:
👃 Use their natural scenting abilities
🧠 Build problem-solving skills
💪 Grow comfort through independent choices
❤️ Strengthen the bond between dog and person

The best part? Nose Work is for every dog.
Young dogs, senior dogs, shy dogs, busy dogs, dogs who love training, and dogs who think traditional classes aren’t their thing, every-dog can participate and succeed.

Instead of telling your dog what to do, Nose Work lets your dog say, “I found it!” and experience the joy of solving the puzzle themselves.

Our Intro to Nose Work class starts Thursday, July 30th at 1:30 PM in Hoquiam,WA and we still have a few spots available!

If you’re looking for a fun, evidence-based activity taught by an ANWI , that helps your dog thrive while deepening your relationship, we’d love to have you join us.

Send us a message or reserve your spot today through the link in the bio! 🐕💕

This little man just turned 11 months! I love him to bits but the reality of having a 62lb adolescent in the house is a lot! Keeping up with busy bodies and busy brains while trying to keep all the other things going doesn’t always happen. Today was one of those days, it’s gloomy and a little wet out so we didn’t have our typical yard time hang out. Santo was bored and decided to create some projects of his own! If you have a busy adolescent that is driving you nuts reach out and I can help! Link in bio

Your dog doesn't have to meet your friends.

You have friends you love. Fantastic. They aren't your dog's friends. My husband has lovely friends who grate on my nerves, and when they come around, I pour myself a special drink and disappear into my office. That's my right, to feel comfortable in my own home. Why isn't it your dog's?

Social interaction with your friends is not a requirement for your dog's behavioral health. Many dogs are not motivated to engage with unfamiliar people, and forcing it increases stress instead of building social skills.

When a stranger approaches, especially in a confined space with no room to retreat, your dog has to rapidly assess risk. For a dog with fear, anxiety, pain, or limited coping skills, that leads to avoidance, freezing, or escalation. Repeated exposure under these conditions doesn't build confidence. It creates sensitization: your dog becomes more hypervigilant of the trigger. It makes them worse.

Not every dog needs a bigger social circle. Most need predictability, distance, and control over their interactions.

Letting your dog opt out of greeting strangers lowers baseline stress, preserves their communication signals, and prevents them from rehearsing defensive behavior.

A dog doesn't need a wide social circle for a good life. It needs an environment that respects its limits, just like you and me.

Presenting a poster at the ABS conference was pretty fun! The location was gorgeous, the attendants were lovely and it was nice to discuss my work and talk about its relevance. Several people opened up to me about their experiences with BE and I am deeply appreciative of their ability to trust me enough to share. Thank you for having me Animal Behavior Society!
