Happy ELEVENTH birthday/gotcha day to Beric! 💙

It’s plain amazing that he has made it this far. He has gotten even more salt and peppered over the past year and he feels SO good these days! He has the best ridiculous sleeping faces (there is a fantastic video in this post of him dreaming). I’m convinced that there is not a more expensive country mutt in the world. But he’s also the sweetest - he loves his kids, his poodle, and his kitty bro. He enjoyed his extra treats and new toys tonight. We love him so!

I haven’t posted a Beric update in a bit. I’m hesitant to share when I don’t really know what is happening. He was having a hard time throughout the month of February. I was cooking and offering every food I could think of - even baked Alaskan salmon. He turned down pretty much everything and was subsisting mostly off of peanut butter that he got his pills in. For some reason one day, he decided he liked some Purina Pro Plan wet food so we decided to see if he could tolerate just half his originally prescribed dose of Piroxicam after a meal. The answer is yes! He eventually refused the wet food and strangely enough has been consistently eating Amy’s Purina Pro Plan Bright Mind kibble for a few weeks now. I believe the Piroxicam has helped him feel better overall. He has been acting like his normal self which is such a turnaround from last month. I am in distress when he doesn’t feel good and a huge weight is temporarily lifted as he eats every meal and is a happy guy. He has destroyed 2 new toys, basked in the sun on the deck, barked his head off at the workers coming and going next door, and is continuing to be my guardian as usual. We are still waiting on him to give us a sign that it’s time for surgery. Until then, we just take one day at a time. The days have all been happy lately. 💛☀️Every good day is a treasure.

I caught Beric doing his turf-destroying kicky foots today. 😄 Had to immediately use the paw-cleaning tool. 💙

Beric update:
He was not able to tolerate Piroxicam. It was the drug that was supposed to slow down the growth of the tumor. We had to stop giving it to him after just a few days because he was starting to show signs of severe upper GI issues. I was worried about stomach ulcers. He has been off of it for 2.5 weeks, but his appetite has not returned. We plan to try a half dose if his appetite ever returns.
He has good days and not so good days. On good days, the only difference in his behavior is the lack of an appetite. Other days, we deal with nausea, lethargy, and discomfort. We have every single medication on hand to keep the bad symptoms controlled. We have what looks like a dog pharmacy in our kitchen. On a regular day, he’s on 8 medications (he was already on 5 of those for his liver and kidneys). We add up to 3 others as needed. He has decided that he wants his pills in peanut butter most of the time. 😉 He gets fed anything he wants that isn’t too fatty - rotisserie chicken, boiled egg whites, baked fish, grilled shrimp, dry noodles, cottage cheese, cucumber slices, apples, low-fat string cheese, lettuce, bread, his rx kidney food, and Amy’s senior wet food. We take it one day at a time and he’s happy most of the time. We will have to judge when it’s time for surgery. He feels the best when we are both home. Lately, he has been asking to sit in my lap while I work at my computer. 🥰
He’s the best boy! 💙

Yesterday wasn’t so good but today is better! We’re in this process of trying to work out the right combination of drugs that still work but don’t make him feel bad. Kicky foots!

Beric had a very normal and happy day today, complete with a car ride, lots of playing, snacks, and a hard afternoon nap. 💙

I consulted with Dr. Fuller briefly yesterday but again in depth this morning after he reviewed the ultrasound from the ER. This type of cancer is called transitional cell carcinoma. Hearing the word carcinoma put me over the edge on Saturday night. That’s all I need to hear in order to understand what is going to happen. No matter which treatment we do, this cancer is pretty much guaranteed to come back. This is going to kill him - there is nothing we can do to stop it. What we can do is make sure he maintains a good quality of life for as long as possible. We’ve developed a treatment plan that is focused on quality over quantity. We will do one surgery to remove the bulk of the tumor once he reaches a certain point with it. It will grow back, but he is on a drug that can sometimes slow the growth. He is expected to have another 3-5 months on this plan before we have to let him go. We will not be opting for chemo. Given his weakened liver and kidneys, that could possibly make him feel worse than he has to and it could kill him before the cancer does by frying those organs. The chemo also will not put this cancer into remission. It just slows down the inevitable. Dogs do not understand why they feel bad and we can’t explain it to them. They live in the moment, and Kyle and I always keep that in mind when making these types of decisions. Our dogs deserve more happy days than painful or sick days.

I’ll be honest. I struggle hard with things like this. It doesn’t matter how much I know, how much care I pour into him, or how much money I throw at it - I can’t fix it and it is hard for me to accept that truth. Beric has been through mange, infection from mange, parasites galore, an intestinal obstruction, a blood infection, kidney disease, and copper storage disease. I have always been able to throw everything I have at these ailments and get him happily to the other side. I can’t do that this time.

Our sweet Beric had a frightening medical episode today so we ended up at the ER. It was shockingly discovered that he has bladder cancer. We’ll consult with Dr. Fuller as soon as we can. In the meantime, we have meds to keep him comfortable. 💔
