This is a picture of Cancer Mast cells under a microscope here in the clinic.
Cancer affects 1 in 4 dogs and 1-5 cats at a similar diagnosis rate to humans.
Masts can appear anywhere on the body, and often look like raised red bumps or ulcerated swollen growths. Rapid swelling/shrinking can occur due to histamine release.
Severity can range from Grades I~III Grade I: high survival rate, well differentiated and often curable via surgery.
Grade II: moderate swelling and or shrinking of the affected area, requiring careful observation and management.
Grade III: highly aggressive, higher fatality rate, often requiring additional treatment such as chemotherapy.
Contact your Veterinarian immediately if you find any concerning lumps or bumps! Especially those that rapidly change in size.
Treatments are complete surgical removal of the tumor and or chemotherapy if tumor has spread or cannot be fully removed.
Early diagnosis is key! many low grade tumors are curable with prompt intervention.
