The Honolulu Zoo will be closed today, Tuesday, September 8, due to Hurricane Lowell.

This closure is being implemented as a precaution to ensure the safety of Zoo guests, employees and animals.

The world would be a MUCH grosser place without vultures!

This weekend, we celebrated International Vulture Awareness Day with Cleo and Joe, our king vultures.

Vultures have one of nature’s dirtiest jobs, and they’re remarkably good at it. They make quick work of carcasses, recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem along the way. A vital part of the circle of life.

King vultures even come equipped with powerful beaks that can tear through hides smaller scavengers can’t, opening up the meal for everyone else.

They get a bad rep, but we just think you need to get to know them better! Come learn more about our vultures friends Cleo and Joe here at the Honolulu Zoo. ❤️

There’s abundant life to care for here in Hawaiʻi.

From the manu (birds) above us to the life in our forests and kai (ocean), we share these islands with species found nowhere else on Earth.

At the Honolulu Zoo, we get to introduce our community to even more of the world’s wildlife and support the work being done to protect species here in Hawaiʻi and far beyond our shores.

Back in the swim of things 🐧 😎

Our African penguins are officially back on view in their newly renovated habitat!

Native to the coasts of South Africa and Namibia, African penguins are built for warmer waters. They’re also in the wild, making the work to understand and protect this species increasingly important.

Now that their doors are back open, come by soon see them for yourself here at the Honolulu Zoo. 🌺

What does a primate look like? More than you might think! 👀

Here at the Honolulu Zoo, our primates include:

🦧 Orangutans
🧡 Siamangs
💛 White handed gibbons
🐒 Hamadryas baboons
🐒 Black handed spider monkeys
💚 Ring tailed lemurs

They come from different parts of the world and face different challenges in the wild. World Primate Day (Sept 1) is a chance to learn more about these species, the places they come from and the challenges they face in the wild. That work is part of what we do here every day at the Honolulu Zoo through animal care, conservation and education!

Look who’s baaaackkk!!! 😍

After more than a year of renovations, our hippo and African penguin exhibits are officially OPEN!

Mara and Louise are back in their newly renovated home and, judging by the sounds coming from our guests today, they’ve been missed! 🥹

We’re so excited to welcome everyone back to this part of the Zoo. Come say aloha to Mara and Louise, visit our African penguins, and see what’s new for yourself! They can’t wait to see you again! 🤙🏼

Asian Elephant Awareness Month may be coming to an end, but here at the Honolulu Zoo, every day is a day to appreciate our girls Mari and Vaigai. We’re incredibly lucky to know these two, care for them and share them with all of you.

And next month, we have an extra special reason to celebrate: Mari is turning 51!! 🐘💛

Come spend some time with Mari and Vaigai, and help us make 51 a special birthday for Mari this September! More details to in the following weeks. Stay tuned!

It’s African Painted Dog Day! 🤙🏼🐾

Native to sub Saharan Africa, African painted dogs are one of the continent’s most endangered carnivores. They live in close packs and rely on true teamwork. They hunt, raise pups together and look out for one another like a family.

And no two look exactly alike! Their patchwork coats of black, brown, white and gold are unique to each dog, much like a fingerprint.

If you’re visiting us today, stop by the Conservation Station near the elephants from 10 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Our educators will be there with biofacts, coloring, games and more in celebration of African Painted Dog Day!!
