🥚Pet quality/hatchery vs. high quality/breeder Silkies🥚
Can you spot the difference? 🤔 When you think of silkies, you probably think of the super fluffy, big topknot chicken. But did you know that there’s a huge difference between hatcheries that breed for QUANTITY vs some private breeders that breed for QUALITY?
Silkies are some of the sweetest, hardiest, most reliable layers out there. They make wonderful pets and some make wonderful exhibition/show chickens. Every now and then, I will explain the difference in silkies to people and it’s okay that not everyone understands why prices are different! Lots of people like to bring up the fact that Tractor Supply or Rural King has chicks for $x.xx but you can guarantee that you won’t get that super fluffy, big topknot chicken that you were imagining from there! The same goes for other breeds too! There will always be private breeders that specialize in your favorite breeds that are simply just better quality than those that come from hatcheries.
It’s completely fine to want silkies but not want to pay the price for quality, which is why hatcheries are out there. However, some hatcheries will trick you by using high quality pictures from somewhere or someone else in order to sell their massive quantities. With that being said, there are chickens out there for everyone! To some, a chicken is a chicken, but to people like me, it’s a little more than that because it takes years of hard work to get breeds just right/how I want them.
