Homer, meet Dr. Susan Shaffer Sookram! ❤️🐾

Starting August 24, Dr. Susan will be seeing patients at Kachemak Bay Animal Hospital.

Dr. Susan brings more than 10 years of veterinary experience and graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2013. She has worked in both mixed-animal and small-animal practice and has spent the past four years practicing here in Alaska.

She and her family moved to Bethel in 2022, where she cared for animals throughout the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. They recently made Homer their home, and we’re really happy to welcome them to the community.

If your pet is due for a visit or you’ve been putting one off, this is a great time to come meet Dr. Susan. And if it’s been a while since we’ve seen you, we’d truly love to welcome you back.

If you’d like to see Dr. Susan, just let us know when you schedule.

Please help us give Dr. Susan and her family a warm Homer welcome and feel free to share the news. ❤️🐾

Kachemak Bay Animal Hospital is a family-owned veterinary practice located in Homer's Kachemak Center (lower mall). Our goal is to be an integral part of your pets' health and wellbeing.

🚤🐾 Headed out on Kachemak Bay? Don't forget your first mate!

Whether you're fishing, exploring the coves, or cruising across the bay, a little preparation goes a long way in keeping your pet safe on the water.

Alaska's waters are beautiful—but they're also cold, unpredictable, and can change quickly. A properly fitted life jacket, plenty of fresh water, and a few essentials can make all the difference for your furry adventure buddy.

We'd love to see your boat dog (or boat cat! 😸). Drop a photo of your favorite first mate in the comments! ⚓💙

💊 Need medication refills?
Please call or text us today with any refill requests so we can have them ready for pickup by 5:00 PM tomorrow (Thursday, July 2). This will help ensure your pets have everything they need over the holiday weekend.

🎆 As you celebrate, please remember that fireworks can be frightening for our furry family members. Keep pets safely indoors, make sure they have current ID tags or a microchip, and provide them with a quiet, secure place to relax during the festivities.

❤️ From all of us at Kachemak Bay Animal Hospital, we wish you a safe, fun, and happy Independence Day.

🇺🇸 Happy 250th Birthday, America! ❤️🤍💙

🌕✨ A Once in a Blue Moon ✨🌕

Today reminded us why we love what we do.

When sweet Eva arrived needing an emergency C-section, our team jumped into action. With the help of our super hero relief veterinarian, Dr. Eli Butler, and an incredible team effort, we worked quickly to help both mom and babies through a difficult delivery.

What happened next felt a little magical.

Not only did Eva come through surgery beautifully, but all three kids were delivered safely and are doing well. As we celebrated their arrival, we realized that tonight’s full moon is a Blue Moon—the second full moon in a single month, giving rise to the phrase “once in a blue moon.”

It seemed only fitting that these special babies receive celestial names:

✨ Cosmic
💙 Blue
🌙 Moon

From a tense emergency to a room full of tiny new lives, happy tears, relieved smiles, and proud mama snuggles, today was truly a reminder of what veterinary medicine is all about.

Please join us in welcoming Cosmic, Blue, and Moon to the world, and in celebrating Eva, one tough mama goat. 💛

This was truly a once in a blue moon kind of day.

Please Help Us Welcome Dr. Eli Butler!

While Dr. Gardenfors enjoys some well-deserved time away, we are excited to welcome Dr. Eli Butler to Kachemak Bay Animal Hospital as our relief veterinarian!

Dr. Butler grew up in Kenai, Alaska, where she spent her time commercial salmon fishing and raising steers through 4-H. From an early age, she developed an appreciation for the many roles animals play in our lives and how important their health is to our communities.

After graduating from Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2022, Dr. Butler moved to Washington and worked in a busy mixed animal practice, gaining experience with both small and large animals, emergency cases, and herd health. She is now practicing relief medicine throughout Alaska and Washington, allowing her to continue expanding her skills while helping veterinary teams provide excellent patient care.

Dr. Butler has a special interest in mixed animal medicine and enjoys the variety that comes with caring for both companion animals and livestock. She has also gained experience in high-volume spay and neuter programs through shelters and volunteer work.

When she's not in the clinic, she enjoys traveling, cooking, hiking, and watching movies.

We are grateful to have Dr. Butler caring for our patients while Dr. Gardenfors is away and know she will be a wonderful addition to our team during her time with us.

If you see her at the hospital, be sure to say hello and help us give her a warm KBAH welcome! 💛🐾
