Our boy, Guiseppe, is so brave and he’s getting better and stronger every day. Yes, I will say it again, pets are an inspiration to me. If you give them a chance and you believe right along with them, sometimes they can make what seems impossible, possible. Today I look around me and I see so many blessings. I am hopeful and I’m thankful.

Pets inspire me. They always have, and I feel so blessed to be surrounded by them in Dave’s and my life at home and, of course, at All Paws, too.

Dave’s and my current hound, Guiseppe, is an incredible example of this very thing. Over a week ago, Guiseppe suddenly developed a serious vestibular, or balance, issue. He already suffered from an inoperable, cancerous tumor, so this was beyond scary to us. He couldn’t stand or walk without assistance and was too nauseated to eat. There is no cure for this, but time and support can make a huge difference. Yes, I’m a veterinarian, but this is a tough one to watch your pet go though.

At first the struggles for him seemed endless and heartbreaking, but not for our boy. He handled everything bravely and amazingly.

Watching him is beyond inspiring to me and Dave. In the last few days we’ve seen great progress and we have great hopes. Without a doubt, he makes me want to be braver myself and better.

If you’re a plant lover like I am then you’ll be interested in hearing about a scary plant problem that endangered one of our sweet cat patients.

A client called us last week about his cat. She was vomiting and losing weight. The weight loss had been gradual but vomiting, poor appetite, and other symptoms had just started a week or two prior. We drew blood from her (she was very brave) and discovered that her liver tests were concerning. I asked her owners if anything new had been introduced to their cat since the symptoms first started. They played detectives and remember that their cat had started eating on a plant they had called a “Silver Bay” or Aglaonema. Once they removed the plant their cat’s symptoms incredibly improved. This was only three days ago so we can’t be certain their cat is out of the woods yet, but we do know that every part of “Silver Bay” is toxic to cats and dogs. If a pet eats a lot at one time or a little over a long time, like our client’s cat, it will cause poor appetite, vomiting, liver problems and even death. Her owners came to their cat’s rescue when they played detective on her behalf.

The “Silver Bay” isn’t he only toxic plant many people have in or around their homes. Check out your plants today to be sure they are pet-friendly.

We are offering group puppy classes! This class will start you and your new puppy off on a good “paw.” You’ll learn how to “speak” your pup’s “language” and learn why your puppy does some of the things he does and how to positively stop an unwanted behavior, sometimes even before it begins. Your pup will want to look to you for direction and walk happily beside you on a leash. Plus, your puppy will learn some important obedience commands that will make life better and easier for you both. Space is limited so that each puppy can have an individual trainer, so call 573-896-4040 to reserve your spot. The class is $20 per puppy. Puppies must be under 1 year old and up to date on vaccines. Bring their leash and their favorite treats. The class is taught by Dr, Mar Doering and her team at All Paws Behavioral Center. The class is on June 24th at 5pm.
Call 573-896-4040 to sign up.

About my amazing wife:

I have been blessed for many years as the spouse of an amazing veterinarian who has dedicated her life to providing quality care for her patients. Among those are our own pack of dogs who share our lives and our home. I think, sometimes when you see someone do extraordinary things on a regular basis it is easy to take them for granted. However, every now and then I will witness something that may be subtle but amazing.

One such event happened this weekend. I was in the house relaxing and our senior Walker C**n Hound, Guisseppe, came to me holding his front leg in the air and limping badly. I called out to my wife to say that something was wrong. Guisseppe was obviously in pain and needed her assistance.

But when you have a family of seven very nosey dogs, taking care of just one is a major event. They all knew that something was going on with Guisseppe and wanted to be in the middle of the action.

When my wife (Dr. Mar Doering) got down on the floor to see what was going on with Guisseppe, the rest of the pack circled her and were very anxious and intrusive. However, using one of the calming techniques that she regularly teaches her behavior clients, she was able to calm down the pack as well as Guisseppe and able to take care of the problem that he was having with his paw.

It turns out that one of his toenails was twisted and caught on another causing him great pain and needed to be separated and trimmed. Doing so would have been very difficult if she had not used her skills and abilities to put him and the rest of our family of dogs at ease.

I just saw this great quote that I want to share with you. It’s about dogs, but, of course, I bet the author would feel the same way about cats, too, if he knew them as I do. Pets truly are a gift. Living with and loving them can make our lives better in so many ways!

“The gift which I am sending you is called a dog, and it’s in fact the most precious and valuable possession of mankind.” -Theadorus Gaza

This is the first time that all three of our girl doggies; Penne Pasta, Pastrami and Muchacha; joined me on our loveseat at the same time to relax, which made it a truly auspicious occasion for me. Our boy doggies were all snoozing around us.
