A W Homestead Sharing our extraordinary life of raising a special needs daughter with Trisomy 21 on our small farm

These kids are super friendly this year! We’re weaning a majority this weekend and have just a few left.

Little Jewel is packing it on now at just one month old. My girl Pearl has consistently out produced herself with every stud we’ve paired her with.

Raising livestock isn’t always colorful reels and cute babies… sometimes it’s medicine, vet wraps, late nights, and learning how to doctor animals when things go wrong.

Thankfully no major injuries happened here, all thanks to strong mother instincts kicking in, but our heart mare Pearl had a nasty run in with fencing, luckily her filly Jewel didn’t end up with a scratch. We doctored both and will be treating Pearls wounds, praying she can heal up and we try to get her bred before it gets too late this season.

This life is rewarding, but it also takes knowledge, grit, and responsibility. Animals depend on you on the good days and the hard ones.

Still a lot of growing left to do in this boy, but he’s really starting to fill out and mature mentally too.

One thing we’re proud of is how respectful he’s stayed through all of it. Confident without being stud aggressive, willing to learn, and starting to carry himself like a stallion should.

Being Blue Valentine/Hancock bred, we know he’ll likely take his time maturing and we’re perfectly okay with that. Good minded, solid ranch-bred horses are worth the wait.

Excited to watch him continue to develop and even more excited to see what qualities he stamps into his future foals someday. Neat pedigree on this guy, heavy Mr Roan Hancock lines!

Missy, our senior mare, helped teach him confidence and how to carry himself like a young stallion.

Now Squaw… our saucy momma bear with a foal at her side… is teaching him a whole different lesson 😂🐴

Because every young stud needs both.
One mare builds the ego.
The other reminds him respect and boundaries still matter.

Safe to say today was a humbling experience for the young man… and Squaw made her point loud and clear.

So many set backs, so many hurdles, but I think our little breeding program may finally be coming together… now we just got to find those acres we’ve been trying to buy for 6 years!💕🤣

One thing we like incorporating with our foals, especially Jewel since she’s a keeper for us, is teaching them to fully relax and trust through groundwork — including laying down work. Not as a trick, but to help build softness, emotional regulation, and a horse that learns to think instead of react. We just want quiet, willing horses that trust their people. 🖤

Hopefully we get these girls turned out to grass this weekend.

Since stepping away from my full-time career a couple months ago, we’ve been able to fully focus on therapies and understanding what truly helps Ms. Charlie thrive. Our days are now filled with classes, podcasts, articles, books, and learning everything we can about the foundational integration of development for children with special needs.

Since starting hippotherapy, we’ve seen such a huge jump in her proprioception, vestibular processing, and ability to cross midline. For the first time, I’m really starting to see her body make more typical transitions through space and movement.

We’re also learning that her cerebellar stroke is playing a much bigger role in her developmental delays than we originally realized. But with that has come a deeper understanding of neuroplasticity and how intentional cerebellar-focused exercises may help strengthen new pathways and improve function over time.

We have a short break from hippotherapy at Heartland Therapeutic Riding until August, but thankfully we were able to get into another program and will start back up in June.

At this point, it might be time to turn one of our older broodmares into Ms. Charlie’s very own therapy horse… and I already have the perfect candidate in mind. 🤍
