Holland Hens Homestead Holland Hens Homestead is our little piece of this earth where we live as self-sufficiently as possible.

We raise chickens, grow a garden, and make as much homemade as possible!

Our peppers are starting to come in! We will ferment most and maybe smoke some to make hot sauce!

Meet Rico, the one who rules the roost! Rico maintains the pecking order, makes sure the girls go inside at night, and LOVES to crow right before 5am daily. He is a brown leghorn and is one good looking bird! We can’t wait to watch him grow and see how big and beautiful he gets!

We were planning on introducing all of our animals and thought national cat day would be a fitting day to introduce these dudes. Meet Bandit, Charley, and Ace. I’d love to say that these guys are on critter patrol but they are far from it. These guys are indoor, treat loving, couch potatoes who get upset if they don’t get their daily can of (nasty) wet food by a certain time. They may look like siblings, but I assure you that Kelsey just has to keep adding more of the same looking cats, hopefully she’s done adding…

We got 7 eggs today and the garden is looking good! The tomatoes are going crazy along with cucumbers, the jalapeños and other hot peppers are HUGE, and Kelsey planted 6 blueberry bushes last weekend! We also got some cool egg cartons that are 4x3 instead of 6x2!

Well, we had our first fatality today. I was checking the outside run camera and saw what looked like a hawk. I got home and he was eating one of the girls. Sad day, but that is a part of it and why you always get more birds than what your significant other says you can get!

We currently have 1 rooster and 11 laying hens. They were born on March 5th and just started laying a few weeks ago! We have been getting more and more every day and just today we got our first egg from one of our Easter eggers! We will have eggs available in the next couple of months and plan to keep prices affordable for everyone and will also be donating $1 for every carton sold to local food based charities.

Hello! We want to take a second to introduce us and Holland Hens to the world. We are a couple living just outside Holmen, WI, doing our best to live simply, sustainably, and more independently from the grocery store and the larger supply chain.

With our flock of 12 chickens, 3 cats, and one dog, we are building a life rooted in self-sufficiency and sustainability. Whether it’s collecting fresh eggs, growing our own food, or preserving what we harvest, we’re always learning on our little slice of the world.

We started this page mainly to share our journey with friends and family, but also to maybe even inspire others to grow a little more of what they eat and live a little closer to the land. Oh, and we may also have way tok many eggs and would love to share them with you. Thanks for being here, and welcome to Holland Hens!
