Mac would like to speak to management. šŸ˜’ šŸ‘€

Apparently the formal complaint includes:
-Being asked to lead respectfully
-Wearing a halter
-Taking a bath
-General violations of his civil liberties

What do you think he’s filing a complaint about? šŸ˜‚

Session #3 with Mac šŸ¤“
For this session, the little Marsh Tacky man learned:
-to contrary belief, the hose is refreshing and is also not a mountain lion
-walking next to people is a lot less work than galloping away
-maybe humans aren’t THAT terrible after all šŸ˜…

Honestly, this session was a huge deal for him.
One thing people don’t always realize with foals is how mental the work really is. Sometimes sessions are 10 minutes, sometimes they’re 2 hours with multiple breaks in between handling. Not because we’re physically drilling on them, but because babies need time to process or ā€œmarinate,ā€ question things, relax, and try again.

You’ll notice in the video when he says ā€œno thank youā€ by tossing his head or resisting a little, I don’t punish him for it or make a big deal out of it. I simply stay consistent, let him process, and ask again. Pretty quickly, he realizes being with me is the easier answer.

Training is a LOT more successful when they’re allowed to have opinions, you just have to help direct those opinions toward the right answer. Horses LOVE when it’s ā€œtheir ideaā€ šŸ˜‰šŸ’”

For a c**t whose first instinct was ā€œabsolutely not,ā€ I’m pretty dang proud of his progression šŸ¤

Welcome to kindergarten, Mac šŸ¤“
This 2.5 month old Marsh Tacky c**t came in with approximately zero thoughts other than ā€œRUN FOR YOUR LIFEā€ even though he’s been around people every day since he was born šŸ˜…

Right now we’re working on the basics:
- people are not mountain lions
- halters are not deadly
- showing me your butt doesn’t make me go away 🤭

This session was focused on getting him comfortable with the halter. First I worked on him accepting touch with my hands/arms, then progressed to putting my arm around him, then repeated the same process while holding the halter and lead rope. Baby steps.

The really cool part happens at the end. After putting the halter over his nose a few times and letting him realize he was okay, I stepped out of his space and took the pressure away. As soon as I did, he relaxed, turned to face me, and licked his lips. šŸ¤

That matters because he’s learning that facing me and looking to me is easier and more comfortable than running away or turning his butt to me. Right now, me stepping away and giving him space feels more rewarding to him than touch does.

This little dude isn’t even 3 months old yet. Nothing is being forced. He’s learning how to think through ā€œscary thingsā€ instead of just reacting to them.

And honestly, even though he’s been handled since birth, some babies just naturally question things more than others. In my opinion, that doesn’t make him bad… it makes him smart.

Tiny steps now become huge wins later. That’s where good horses start.

For being so white, River really doesn’t get himself too stained up… but it was time for a purple shampoo on his mane and tail, plus a quick rinse.

First three pics: I turn him loose after getting him all cleaned up and he walks off like he’s done with me
Last pic: creeps back to give his official review of spa day šŸ˜‚
