Building confidence can look a little silly sometimes! Giving young horses time to get comfortable with new sights, sounds and sensations is a critical part of building a foundation for everything that comes next.

If I’d tried this before we built that foundation, I probably would’ve ended up skiing through the arena on the end of the lead rope 🤣 I’ve spent plenty of time helping him get comfortable with new things, including working around his ears and face. Being able to quietly touch those areas was an accomplishment of its own!

The quiet stuff matters. Sometimes it just comes with a ridiculous hat 😜

Meet Cactus 🌵
This 2yo Marsh Tacky stud c**t is only on day 3 of halter breaking/training and he is already making huge progress.

Day one, his answer when I approached was to turn away and escape, reacting instead of thinking. By the end of that first session, he was definitely thinking and doing his best to find the responses I was asking for! We ended with him comfy enough to stop, face me, and lick and chew.

Day 2 he definitely remembered what we worked on, but had a little bit of a “wellll do I HAVE to listen to this lady?” attitude 😂. We still ended on a great note. 🥰

Today he was stopping, giving me two eyes, facing me, coming to me with the slightest ask, and following me around the pen without a halter or lead rope 👏.

He’s also already flexing (when I ask and when I don’t 😝), picking up both front feet, handled his first hose down yesterday like a champ, and today got introduced to fly spray for the first time.

For a c**t that you still can’t just walk up to in the pasture, this is BIG progress in only three days. This lil guy has a fantastic mind on him! 🤍

The first time I put my foot in the stirrup, she got a little nervous. Once I stepped back down, she scurried around for a moment, but settled quickly. We worked through it, tried again, and she handled it really well.

Session #3 with Mac 🤓
For this session, the little Marsh Tacky man learned:
-to contrary belief, the hose is refreshing and is also not a mountain lion
-walking next to people is a lot less work than galloping away
-maybe humans aren’t THAT terrible after all 😅

Honestly, this session was a huge deal for him.
One thing people don’t always realize with foals is how mental the work really is. Sometimes sessions are 10 minutes, sometimes they’re 2 hours with multiple breaks in between handling. Not because we’re physically drilling on them, but because babies need time to process or “marinate,” question things, relax, and try again.

You’ll notice in the video when he says “no thank you” by tossing his head or resisting a little, I don’t punish him for it or make a big deal out of it. I simply stay consistent, let him process, and ask again. Pretty quickly, he realizes being with me is the easier answer.

Training is a LOT more successful when they’re allowed to have opinions, you just have to help direct those opinions toward the right answer. Horses LOVE when it’s “their idea” 😉💡

For a c**t whose first instinct was “absolutely not,” I’m pretty dang proud of his progression 🤍
