Fireworks season is coming soon, and while many people enjoy the celebrations, our dogs, cats and even some horses will often feel very differently about all the noise and chaos 🎆🐶

At Horse and Hound Alignment and Veterinary Care, we want to remind everyone that fear and anxiety during fireworks are extremely common in pets. Some dogs may pace, pant, shake, hide, vocalize, drool, try to escape, or even injure themselves when frightened.

A few ways you can help keep your pets safe and comfortable during fireworks season:

🐾 Make sure collars, tags, and microchip information are current in case a frightened pet escapes
🐾 Keep pets indoors before dark and provide a quiet, secure space to relax. Horses should be also placed in a secure area where they cannot harm themselves if they get spooked.
🐾 Close windows, curtains, and blinds to reduce noise and flashing lights
🐾 Use calming music, white noise, or fans to help mask outside sounds
🐾 Never bring fearful dogs to fireworks displays

For pets with more severe anxiety, anti-anxiety medications can make a huge difference in comfort and safety. These medications are not meant to fully “knock them out” but rather help reduce the panic and stress so pets can cope more comfortably during difficult situations.

These medications can also be helpful for many other stressful events, including:

✈️ Travel
🚗 Car rides
🩺 Veterinary visits
✂️ Grooming appointments
⛈️ Thunderstorms
🏠 Moving or household changes
👋 Separation anxiety

Every pet is different, and we are happy to discuss the safest and most appropriate options for your individual dog before fireworks season arrives.

If you think your pet may need support this year, now is the perfect time to plan ahead — don’t wait until the fireworks have already started! ❤️

🐾 LOW COST CAT SPAY & NEUTER CLINIC 🐾
Hosted by Horse and Hound Alignment and Veterinary Care

We are excited to offer a LOW COST spay and neuter clinic to help support responsible pet ownership in our community! ❤️

📅 July 11th, 2026
⏰ 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Location: Double Dollar Ranch (9431 N 400 W St), Holden, UT 84636. Parking will be available in front of the big blue barn.

💲 Pricing:
• Neuter: $50
• Spay: $75

✨ Includes a rabies vaccine with every surgery!

Additional services will also be available at highly discounted prices, including:
✔ Deworming
✔ Microchips
✔ Additional vaccines
✔ FeLV/FIV disease testing
…and more!

📌 RULES & REQUIREMENTS:
1️⃣ This event is ONLY for cats.
2️⃣ Each cat MUST be in a separate carrier — no doubling up due to safety concerns.
3️⃣ Limit of 3 cats per owner to keep things fair for everyone. If there are still spots open as we get closer, we may be able to adjust this.
4️⃣ Space is limited, so owners MUST be able to pick up their animals approximately 2–3 hours after drop-off.
5️⃣ A $50 deposit per animal will be required at drop-off.

❓FAQ: Why can’t we do this all the time?
We absolutely wish we could offer these prices every day! However, this clinic is only possible because Dr. Kat is donating her time and not getting paid for performing the surgeries. Veterinary surgical supplies, medications, anesthesia, and staffing are also very expensive. We received a very generous grant from Millard County that is going to help off-set these costs for us as well. Thank you Millard County!

Many 501(c)(3) spay/neuter clinics are able to offer lower-cost surgeries because they operate as nonprofits, receive grants and donations, and often have access to subsidized supplies, volunteer staff, and special funding dedicated specifically to reducing pet overpopulation. We are a privately-owned company and do not have access to most of these resources.

We are grateful for the opportunity to help make veterinary care more accessible while still maintaining safe, quality care for your pets. ❤️

Horse and Hound Alignment and Veterinary Care is back in full swing — Dr. Kat has officially returned from vacation and is now available for appointments again! 🐴🐄🐶 We hope everyone is surviving the early fire season, mystery weather, and the endless spring shedding. 😅

Spring is a busy time for keeping our animals healthy and ready for the warmer months ahead. This is your friendly reminder to check in on spring vaccines and wellness care for your crew:

🐴 Horses: Spring vaccines are important for protection against diseases like West Nile, Eastern/Western Encephalitis, Tetanus, Rabies, and Flu/Rhino depending on travel and exposure. It’s also a great time to discuss deworming and overall wellness.

🐄 Cattle: Spring processing often includes vaccines for respiratory and clostridial diseases, reproductive health management, and parasite control before pasture season gets fully underway.

🐶🐱 Small Animals: Check your dogs and cats records for any needed vaccine updates, heartworm prevention, flea/tick control, and wellness exams as your outdoor activity picks up.

We’re also excited to share that we are planning a LOW-COST feral cat spay/neuter clinic in July! 🐾 We've received a generous grant from Millard County to help off-set some expenses, and we want to give back to our generous community by helping reduce the stray and feral cat population in a safe and humane way. More details, dates, and sign-up information will be coming soon — so stay tuned!

We’re happy to be back and look forward to seeing all of you and your animals soon! ❤️

As a reminder, we are open W-F from 9am-4pm for large, exotic and small animal appts. The BEST way to make an appt is to text us at: 435-261-2834. We can also receive phone calls to this number, or you can email us at: [email protected].

🩺 **A Note from Dr. Kat** 🩺

I've had several clients come in recently with a suspected diagnosis for their pet—based entirely on ChatGPT searches. I completely understand the desire to get answers quickly when something feels wrong. But this is an important moment for a gentle (and honest) reminder.

⚠️ **ChatGPT is not a solo veterinary diagnostic tool.**

AI programs like ChatGPT don’t examine your animal, can’t feel a mass, listen to a heart, check a temperature, or run diagnostics. Instead, they generate answers by pulling from patterns in online information. If the program doesn't *know* the answer, it can and will MAKE THINGS UP. This may show up as a combination of unrelated conditions, or the program may link together inconclusive or outdated evidence in ways that sound authoritative—but aren’t medically accurate.

Even more concerning, AI can suggest rare or dramatic diagnoses without the clinical context needed to rule out far more common (and often simpler) causes. This can lead to unnecessary fear for you as a client, delays in proper care, or pressure to treat a problem that doesn't actually exist.

🩻 **Veterinary medicine is hands-on, evidence-based, and case-specific.**
Every animal is different. Diagnosis relies on physical exams, history, diagnostics, and professional judgment—not just symptoms typed into a search bar.

I absolutely welcome questions and discussions (regardless of the source)—that’s part of good medicine! Just please remember that AI should never replace a licensed veterinarian when it comes to your animal’s health.

If something doesn’t seem right with your pet, let’s look at them together. Your animal deserves real answers, not algorithmic guesses. 🐾

🎄🤧 Well… we’re back! 🤧🎄

First things first—sorry for the long hiatus! Dr. Kat and her whole household have been taking turns being under the weather (because apparently sharing is caring 🫠). We’re finally on the mend and wanted to pop back in with something timely and educational!

🦠 Human Flu vs. Canine Flu — Same Same, but Different

With flu season in full swing, let’s talk about how human influenza and canine influenza are similar—and where they part ways.

**What’s similar?**

* Both are highly contagious respiratory viruses
* Spread through coughing, sneezing, and close contact
* Symptoms can include coughing, fever, lethargy, nasal discharge
* Crowded spaces = higher risk (schools for kids, dog parks/kennels for pups!)

**What’s different?**

* 🧬 Different viruses: Humans get human flu, dogs get canine flu (they don’t swap—so no, your dog didn’t give you the flu 😉)
* 🐶 Dogs often have a persistent cough that can last weeks, even after they feel better
* 😷 Most dogs don’t get severely ill, but puppies, seniors, and immunocompromised dogs can have complications
* 💉 There is a canine influenza vaccine—especially helpful for dogs who travel, board, show, or socialize often. As of right now, we haven't had any major outbreaks of canine influenza in Utah, but definitely check your destination if traveling as surrounding states have had some outbreaks.

If your dog has a cough, fever, or seems extra tired, it’s always better to check in early—especially this time of year.

🎁 Wishing all of our amazing clients a warm, healthy, and joyful holiday season!
May your celebrations be full of good food, happy tails, and *minimal coughing* (human or canine 😅).

🐴 Why F***l Egg Counts Matter for Your Horse 🐴

As we learn more about anthelmintic (dewormer) resistance, responsible parasite management has become more important than ever. Routine deworming without testing can actually make the problem worse—parasites are becoming increasingly resistant to common dewormers, meaning those products may no longer work when your horse really needs them.

This is where f***l egg counts (FECs) come in. FECs allow us to measure how many parasite eggs your horse is shedding and identify which horses are “high shedders.” With this information, we can create a targeted deworming plan that reduces unnecessary treatments, slows resistance, and keeps your horse healthier in the long run.

📸 Attached image: A microscope view of a strongyle egg found in a sample from a foal—one of the most common internal parasites in horses. Strongyles are important to monitor because their larvae migrate through the intestines and blood vessels, potentially causing colic, weight loss, and long-term gut damage. Regular FECs help us detect strongyle burdens early and respond appropriately before they become a problem.

If you’d like to schedule a f***l egg count or discuss a strategic deworming plan for your herd, feel free to reach out—we’re here to help keep your horses healthy from the inside out! 🐎💚
