As groomers, our job isn’t to shame pet parents for the condition of their dog’s skin or coat. Our job is to educate, support, and help create a plan that benefits the dog moving forward.

When a dog comes in matted, overdue for grooming, or dealing with skin and coat issues, it can be difficult not to feel emotional about it. I’ve seen some very severe cases myself. But professionalism means meeting people with kindness, not judgment.

When clients feel embarrassed or criticized, they may avoid returning to the salon and unfortunately, the dog is often the one who suffers most from that decision.

Instead, focus on solutions. Ask questions like, “How can I help?” and offer guidance that fits the family's lifestyle. Say things like, “Let’s find a haircut and maintenance plan that works best for both you and your dog.”

Life happens. Schedules get busy. Financial situations change. Health issues arise. A little grace and understanding can open the door to better care for that dog in the future.

We work for the dogs. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is educate with compassion, encourage consistency, and help pet parents succeed without making them feel ashamed.

Dog grooming has changed a lot over the years — and not because groomers suddenly decided to raise prices.

Back in the 1990s, the average full groom was about $40–$50.
If prices had increased just $2 per year since then (like most skilled trades), that same groom would be around $117 today for a small dog weighing 0-15 pounds.

For many years, grooming stayed underpriced while:
• supply costs increased
• insurance increased
• utilities increased
• rent increased
• groomer pay increased
• and the popularity of high-maintenance coats (like doodles) dramatically increased the time required per dog

Most full grooms require 2.5–3.5 hours of hands-on work from a trained professional.

Dog grooming is also one of the most physically demanding careers people don’t often think about.

It’s a female-dominated trade that involves:

• standing 6–8 hours per day
• repetitive wrist and shoulder strain
• lifting large dogs
• breathing hair and dander daily
• working around urine and f***s
• handling nervous or biting dogs
• and continuing to provide calm, compassionate care through it all

Many groomers develop long-term back, shoulder, and respiratory issues over time.

At Zen Dog Grooming, our small-dog haircuts currently start at $90 in 2026 which is still below what grooming would average today if pricing had followed steady increases over the last 30+ years.

We truly love what we do, and we appreciate every client who supports professional grooming and our small business.

"Just a quarter to half inch of ice? What's the big deal?"

Ice is HEAVY, and when it falls in the form of freezing rain, it sticks to everything. Every leaf, branch, and twig on a tree gathering ice adds up to a lot of weight in a hurry.

Worst-case scenario for this weekend could bring some 0.5" totals to Central Texas. On a 30ft wide tree, that adds up to more than 7,000 pounds of ice, or roughly 109.5 fully-grown golden retrievers. That's enough to send some limbs tumbling into powerlines in some instances.
