This 6-year-old orange tabby has been waiting since 11/2/2024… that’s 588 days in the shelter, at no fault of his own—and he is SO ready to finally go HOME. 🏡🧡
Rusty is the ultimate lover boy. He gives the sweetest head butts, soaks up attention from everyone he meets, and has completely stolen our hearts. He just wants a family to call his own.
His favorite things (besides food, of course 🍽️)?

Hilton Head Humane Story 42 of 50:

Barney was found hanging around outside of a veterinarian’s office with no fur, severe ear infections in both ears, and Heartworm. Although he had been treated for Heartworm and his skin had improved, he still struggled. He had been adopted but was returned shortly after, as managing his skin allergies proved to be too challenging for the well-intentioned family. We were back to square one. After much deliberation and consultation from our medical team, we knew that Barney’s skin would improve if he moved to an area with fewer allergens. We contacted our rescue partners in New England, asking them if they could help us find this very loving, affectionate dog a home, and they hit a home run! After 981 days at Hilton Head Humane, Barney (now called Barley) went HOME to a family that absolutely ADORES him.

His family writes: “I've had him now for 4 years and he continues to grow and thrive. They think he's around 12 years old now but that doesn't slow him down. He still loves to run around in the snow. He loves going to events where he can get attention from strangers, we go to baseball games, events in Boston, and sometimes he comes to the office with me. He has started to like to snuggle with people. His skin is doing fantastic. Thank you guys for the time and effort you put into him so he could get to this point!”

🐾Meet Loca (Available through Beaufort County Animal Services)🐾
This 2-year-old spayed terrier came to the shelter as an owner surrender in April and has been nothing but sweet and gentle with staff ever since. She walks well on leash, allows handling all over, and has done well meeting other dogs, though she would do best with slow introductions as she can get uncomfortable with more rambunctious greetings. Loca is spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated, and is currently being treated for heartworms.
She is available through Beaufort County Animal Services—if you’re interested in meeting her, please call 843-255-5010 to set up a meet and greet! 🐶💛
