First, we let him decompress and settle in. A dog that’s stressed isn’t learning, everything is just noise.

What does it mean to have a socially neutral dog?

A socially neutral dog doesn’t need to interact with every person, dog, or distraction in the environment. They can exist in the world calmly and confidently while keeping their engagement on their handler.

We’re not looking for perfection. Dogs are allowed to get startled, spook, or be unsure. What matters is recovery. Can they stop barking, settle down, and look to us for guidance?

We spend so much time teaching them to live in our world. Sometimes we forget to join them in theirs. The obedience is important, but moments like this are what it’s all for.
